Lately ive been toying with the idea of converting my 105 1hz to a 1hd-fte. Ive done some research on the topic but still have some unanswered questions, im hoping someone here can help.
I know I need to use a different gearbox, but which one?
Is it possible to keep the part time 4wd?
how long would the car be off the road for if i paid a suitably qualified person to do the work?
how much of a hassle is it switching from a mechanical diesel to electronic in terms of sorting out the wiring?
Any help with any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. I know a project like this is expensive and difficult but the thought of the 150kw(more with chip) diesel in my live axle cruiser is very tempting.
Thanks

putting a 1hd-fte into a 2005 105 standard cruiser

Your easiest option is to swap your box for a petrol 105 gearbox and transfer. Then, you need a diesel 80 series bell. This will give you t/d clutch setup. If you only have the 1hz flywheel, a fzj75 clutchplate fits in the 1hz pressureplate to match the spline...a safari tough clutch pressure plate may hold together, they are 11 inches diameter as opposed to the std t/d 12 inch clutch.
There are other ways you can proceed, using what you have will work for a while only....better to swap the lot while you can...better still to buy a motor/box combo.
Std ratios on a t/d is 4.1, yours has 4.3 diffs...so 315's will get it back to std ratios, alternately, i know someone selling 4.1 t/d diffs

Not 100 percent but i'm sure you run into issues running the R box behind the 1hd. I think the clutches are different setups.
but if your spending the coin on the motor then u wont want it let down by a killing the gearbox couple of month's later.
id recommend getting someone to do it or it can get end up costing alot of coin if something has an issue like a faulty computer or dodgy wire.
Coz if you do it there's no warranty on work

You can physically use your box with a fte. Just use the 1hz flywheel, crush plate and clutch. If you drive nicely it will last a while.
I run an r series box in my troopy and it has more power than a standard fte.
Does the box like it? i dont think so, but its was there when i bought it n it still works When it goes bang ill replace it
If i was doing an engine swap would i bother keeping it. NO
You will get just as much for a second hand r series box as you will pay for a good h series box...............why is this? because they are weak and people need them.

Certainly would be easy, howeverpopeyehj60 wrote:u can pick up the 1hdfte and part time box out of the 79 series that way your not mix matching clutches etc etc.
thatd be the easier way of doing it.
Might pay to give the guys from total care 4wd a call. they do alot of these conversions
1. Is the shifter locations in the same place. I ask as I don't know and saw a converison with pics online where the guy had to cut diffferent holes in his tunnel for whatever set up he was using.
2. If he likes the idea of 150+kw's he's not going to get it easily out of a ute motor.
