4:6 dif ratio's
It should be a 3.9 like mine and 4.3s should go well. On 33"s the rev range will sit about 100rpm above stock. Nissan 4.3s are around the $1100 each+fit thus why Im going 4.6s as you can get after market ones for $600 new.OGJON wrote:hey ppl I'm picking up my '98 GU 4.5L Auto this week from the dealer
is it correct that it should have 3.9 difs as standard?
It currently has 2" lift on 31" A/T's I'm wanting to run 33" muds for off road & do transfer gears as well, which diff ratio should I change them to?
Will be our daily driver & weekend off roader as well as our touring rig.
would I be right in thinking 4.3 diff gears be the ones to get?
I'm in Newcastle nsw anyone recommend where to get the diff gears?
& approx how much $$?
THE GQ LEAFY"S USUALLY COME WITH 4.3's thats whats in mine!tommy182 wrote:anyone know what the diff ratio is for my gq.. i gota a leafy ute with the masive rear diff on it, its alot bigger than a gq wagon or even coil gq or gu rear diff. like a bloody truck diff.
it sits on about 2600 at 100kmph. and really good low range
An ounce of precaution is better than a ton of cure!
This has made me think of another question, will a 4.3 ring and pinion fit in my diff (3.9)? or do I have to chang the whole diff?tommy182 wrote:thanks mate was just wondering, there pretty huge hey, me and me mate did the diff oils awhile back, hes got a gq wagon, and from memory mine took like 9 litres i think and his was like 4-5. thort it was pretty funny at the time
should fit! i'm no expert but pretty shure!Glennb wrote:This has made me think of another question, will a 4.3 ring and pinion fit in my diff (3.9)? or do I have to chang the whole diff?tommy182 wrote:thanks mate was just wondering, there pretty huge hey, me and me mate did the diff oils awhile back, hes got a gq wagon, and from memory mine took like 9 litres i think and his was like 4-5. thort it was pretty funny at the time

nissan quoted me nearly 1000bucks for just rear 4.6 ring and pin... eff that..Glennb wrote:I just read that the after market 4.6s get noisy after 35000ks now Im thinking to go genuine in the rear and after market in the front which means I might as well go for the 4.3s and find a second hand front as it will be cheaper than 4.6s now.

i went 4.6 form 3.9 in my td42t auto and it was the best thing i have done it has heaps better take off and more like a car to drive around on the road and i have run it with 33's , 35's and 37's i would never look back
Only drama that i can say is that with the auto the car just likes to drive it self down hills while in low range (no engine breaking) but thats just what you get with an auto and can be fixed with transfer gears

I was wrong about what size tyres are on it
it's already got 33" BFG A/T's(they look heaps small in the guards)
seems to have plenty of power, no probs up hill revs around 2400 up hill with auto box set to auto mode.
took it for a quick spin in the bush yesty arvo it really crawls in low range 1st gear it just idled through the mud(hub depth) & the ruts without me having to do anything but steer, I suspect previous owner may have changed diff gears but I'm not 100% sure I could be wrong.
oh & I suspect it has 3" lift not 2" like the deal said due to the fact the 33"s look tiny

Be wary about going too low if this things is going to be a tourer. For a weekend warrior, go for it, different story.
If you're reasonably happy with power and gearing already with the auto and 3.9s, don't drop the gearing too far unless you have 37s+ in your plans. Maybe consider transfer gears instead.

it's hardly stock it's a lot higher than a stocker as I parked it next to my next door neighbor's stock Patrol & the bottom of the side steps on mine is like a foot higher than his.zookimal wrote:Looks pretty stock. I'd be surprised if the gearing has been changed but could be wrong.
The auto will play it's part.

Looks at least a 3" lift, what is the car reving at 100kmh? If its around 1725 you will have stock diff ratios.OGJON wrote:it's hardly stock it's a lot higher than a stocker as I parked it next to my next door neighbor's stock Patrol & the bottom of the side steps on mine is like a foot higher than his.zookimal wrote:Looks pretty stock. on gas @ 100klm/h it revs between 2200-2280rpmGlennb wrote:Looks at least a 3" lift, what is the car reving at 100kmh? on Petrol @ 100klm/h it revs closer to 2100-2220rpm
& feels quite sporty for a 4wd

WOW Im thinking they are 4.88s. Is OD working and is the TConvertor locking? My car will rev at 2000 to 2100 when the TC unlocks. 4.88s will rev at 2185 roughly on 33" tyres , TC locked.OGJON wrote:on gas @ 100klm/h it revs between 2200-2280rpmGlennb wrote:Looks at least a 3" lift, what is the car reving 100kmh? EDIT: are your kph true speed(by GPS) If not they could be something different.

ok i want to clear something up
when ppl are saying the engine revs more with the lower ratio its not reving anymore than if you had 31" tyres back on, and the engine was designed for that, so no major issues there
put 31" tyres back on with 4.11:1 diff ratios and do 110K's up the freeway according to the GPS, then do the same with 35" on 4.625:1 diffs and get it up to 110K's by the GPU, u will find the RPM is identical.

ogjon thinks he has different diff ratios in his car but unsure what, so i got onto a tyre gear calculator and put in his revs + speed + final trans ratio+ possible diff size + his tyre size and 4.88 matched best. But you have made realize that I should told him to get the speed using a GPS as the cars speedo could be out which would throw the calculation way out.
cheers
