More flex front 100 series by removing bolt?
Moderators: toaddog, TWISTY, V8Patrol, Moderators
i doubt your going to gain 4 foot of flex out of removing a bolt... left rear dropped into a hole, bad line is all... even a 5 linked 80 diffed 40 series did the same thing in the same spot... all the weight is on the tire in the hole, you don't flex at all.BadMav wrote:Yeah you're right, cos that shot of your's looks so stable.bad_religion_au wrote:is it too late to say flex is overrated?
oh, and front and rear locker, it was easy to drive straight out that hole too.
flex is overrated.
my 40 maxes out 14 inch travel shocks at all 4 corners now. i still say flex is overrated.
Spit my last breath
I think what's important to recognise is that balance is more important than lots of flex. 5 link rears with the swaybar removed have much lower roll stiffness than radius arm fronts and lead to poor balance - just look at any photo of a GQ patrol with stock arms flexing - 70% of the work is being done by the rear.
The last thing you want when climbing is high front roll stiffness- it leads to a poorly balanced car that works against you. A by product of lowering roll stiffness is added outright flex assuming you have the other components to make it work, but the bigger win is a more balanced car.
It's clear that pulling a bolt might not be the best way of doing it though. I'm not a fan of any suspension mod that makes the car worse (or dangerous) to drive on road on the basis of improved offroad performance- I don't actually see that the requirements for vehicle behaviour as any different.
Steve.

Without getting into a flex-off or flex vs lockers war, crunk81us's question was
I think we have achieved that.crunk81us wrote:... by removing one bolt from somewhere on the front suspension, it would act similarly to an xlink. Does anyone know what this one bolt is and what it's dis/advantages are?
Don't take life too seriously...it isn't permanent.

to sum it up yes it will provide more flex in the front end under the right situation, but no its not the best way to acheve it when drivin the car.

i dont have radius arms but i think my setup/car would almost have all four on the ground in the same situation as above pic.bad_religion_au wrote:BadMav wrote:Yeah you're right, cos that shot of your's looks so stable.bad_religion_au wrote:is it too late to say flex is overrated?
so pulling a radius arm bolt would have netted that much flex eh???
tyre size will have an effect on bushes as well with bolt removed.
as stated your braking might play havoc with handling, even in the dirt.
slow crawling rock stuff i guess it will help as long as shocks can travel that extra
michael
doubt it mate, look at the front shackles they are almost paralel to each other. there is no load on those leafs to make them flex. all the weight in on the back passenger tire (and rear 1/4 panel ) my rig has much more travel than that when ramped/crossed up. i posted the bigger pic to hilight badmav's error in assuming my avatar pic was unstable due to lack of flex...11_evl wrote:i dont have radius arms but i think my setup/car would almost have all four on the ground in the same situation as above pic.bad_religion_au wrote:BadMav wrote:Yeah you're right, cos that shot of your's looks so stable.bad_religion_au wrote:is it too late to say flex is overrated?

no weight on the front end = no suspension movement. doesn't matter if you have 64 foot of travel.
even a couple of blokes standing on the bullbar was enough to get it to cross up and almost touch the ground. that's how unloaded the front was.

Nah, but pulling a few leaf hanger bolts mightbad_religion_au wrote:BadMav wrote:Yeah you're right, cos that shot of your's looks so stable.bad_religion_au wrote:is it too late to say flex is overrated?

Back to topic - I know a guy with Cruiser arms under his rig and not only is he withouht one of the bolts, but when they did it they removed the entre "lump" in the arm.
Personnally there's no way I'd do it to my junk, but I am sure in most situations it's not as bad as most people would make out.....But don't do it....

stuff
it up to the individual and themselves knowing the consequences if it breaks especially on the road.... having said that i have done it in both my 80s and the car sits more level when flexing, relieves strain on rear suspension cos the front is actually flexing and not relying on the rear fully flexed up all the time, you need to change your driving style as the front wont drop straight into a hole, it will sit more level and drop the wheel into it instead of the whole car, i dont have 400hp at the back wheels to be concerned about twisting the diff off its mounts, look at some rock crawlers setups they have 1 panhard, 1 upper arm and 2 lower arms so at 1 end furthurest from diff there is only 1 arm/bolt attatched to the housing, 2 on the other side........for cheap flex it works a treat. cos the front end acts like a massive swaybar any flex your getting with all bolts in is tearing the f#%k out of the 2 mounts as each side is twisting against each other. it will only flex so much anyway even if you have longer shocks cos your upper edge of the radius arm binds on the steering arm flexing both ways and when the left wheel flexs down and right up the now boltless front bush hits the underside of the axle tube.....................
