Crown Wheel Bolts

Post by ozy1 »

I had a noise today, pulled out rear axles and found a bolt inside one of the axle tubes, it had slightly scorred the shaft, and upon pulling the drain plug found there to be a lil bit of metal, not really huge chunks but enough,

Has this happened to anyone before?

Also i havnt touched the centre to this date(owned car for a year), and the air locker was fitted back in 92

i think ARB changed the gq locker due to that problem.
something about adding more bolts somewhere [was 4 now is 6 ??] but he also drilled new holes and doubled the amount of bolts in the old one and it is in someone elses gq now as ARB gave him a new one.

the old school ARB lockers, generally use 4 allen drive cap screws to retain the end cap on the hemisphere; those 4 bolts have a habit of working loose and evenually they fall out and/or snap off. if you pull the diff and find you have one of these older air lockers, get all new high tensile cap screws for it, do them up TIGHT with a generous coating of permanent thread locking compound.

the newer air lockers use 6 bolts to retain the cap and incorporate locking tabs on the bolt heads but they still sometimes fall out.

Well i have pulled the centre out and have found the affected area,

ok all, sit down............

There was not one Crown Wheel bolt in tight, they had all wound out about 15mm, the one i found in the axle tube was the only one that had come all the way out, and it seems as thought it has groung away some of the cast centre housing, this bolt also warbed the airlocker plate a tad due to the side forces of the bolt hittin the housing, will get pics later.

The previos Owner had the locker installed in 92, i think the warrenty perioid might be slightly over,

and as for the comment about how lucky i was towing the MQ home, extremly lucky, WHen my mate with the MQ seen it yesterday, he nearly shit himself.

The same thing happened to a mate's dad a few years ago on a Rangie rear with an ARB locker. The crownwheel bolts came undone but in this case it wasn't noticed until the diff went kaboom. No loctite was used on the bolts.

Maybe it was the same ARB installer that did both jobs???
