Pulling CVs apart?

Post by Nev62 »

Ok guys, what is the trick in pulling Rzeppa type CVs apart. I cannot see any circlip but something is holding the star in there.

Look at the other end, the cv won't come apart but the other joint will

Usually there is a rounded circlip that retains the spider on the shaft inside the joint. All that is usually needed is to put the inboard side of the shaft in a vice and give a decent whack with a rubber mallet to the cup to get the circlip to shrink and allow the joint to come apart. You may have to try different positions on the cup to find the sweet spot of the circlip. Be sure to replace the circlip.

Ok, that makes sense. Will play with a dead CV and see what gives.

Drill a round hole in bench, slam cv and axle down onto hole. Axle end should pop out. (eventually)

hey...top idea, better than the mash hammer trick as it hits evenly :D

It actually needs to be a bit off center to start the circlip compressing on one side, and use a rubber mallet, it will take a decent swing or two. Using a BFH is only going to damage the spider, balls and possibly fracture the cup (or at least set up a stress point that will later fracture)
