Although illegal, I did the same to a 93 falcon I had years ago. It had the standard dash and I put in an S pak dash with tacho/oil/volt gauges.
I carefully stripped the dash, undid the speedo face and physically turned the numbers backwards until they matched the original dash. Put it back together and it all worked fine. took about 2 hrs all up.
The falcon had the old style odometer that rolled to the next number. Not sure if the cruiser has an electronic readout or not.

It becomes a crime if there is intent to defraud.

I've got a similar question for a completely electronic unit (i.e. LCD display).
I'm replacing a cluster without a rev counter for one with a rev counter. The new one has 30,000km more on it.
The real issue being, our diesels are taxed on km travelled. No way am I paying $30,000km worth of tax for distance I haven't driven. It'll take about another 2 years for that vehicle to cover the 30,000km.

Theres a guy on Ebay reprogramming Hilux and 100 series clusters for $200. Will set mileage to whatever you want.KiwiBacon wrote:I've got a similar question for a completely electronic unit (i.e. LCD display).

There's nothing illegal about putting a different odometer in with a different reading. Your car could have done 550,000 k's, and you can put one in that says 50,000 k's.mike_nofx wrote:I thought on newer cars with electronic readout that the km were recorded On the ecu/computer and not the cluster?
Also, if I replace my cluster with a lower km one, say for upper spec model or because mine is damaged is this illegal?
The crime occurs when you attempt to sell the vehicle, and claim it has done 50,000k's, not 550,000k's. Or if you attempt to claim warranty on a vehicle that has exceeded its distance based warranty limit, etc etc.
If you want to stay above board, take photos of the new and old odomerers together, showing both readings, and keep the old odomoter to be sold with the car etc.

Re: Rewinding odometers
Your sig says you have a 97 DX and you are replacing the cluster with a 97 GXL. Therefore everything is the same in regards to plugs and the actual instrument itself (speedo). Easiest thing would be to swap the speedos around. Take the front shroud section off so you only have the bare cluster and you will see the instruments are all seperate. On the back you will see a couple of screws behind each instrument, unscrew the ones behind the speedo and it will come out complete through the front. Do the same with yours then screw it into the GXL cluster. Bingo you have the correct odometer reading.nicbeer wrote:Hey all,

ANyone done a wind back or have any ideas?
Working in a workshop, we are told that the replacement speedo must be wound forward or backward to the same as the old unit, when replacing a speedo, regardless of whether it is a new or used unit, odometer only or complete cluster.

Re: Rewinding odometers
I have done this twice now. I had to get a stat. dec. and then have a proper workshop carry out the work.nicbeer wrote:Hey all,

Yep I can confirm this. When the speedo on my old magna broke and I replaced it with one with a significantly reduced Km's I called DPI (WA) and asked about it. My specific concern was that when i sold it the km's that would go on the transfer paper would be less than what they were when I brought it (Obvious crook is obvious eh?). After getting the run around for a bit - presumibly because they aren't use to people doing the right thing , I got onto someone who said 'its fine, i fact we would rather you did replace it than have a car with a broken speedo but more realistic numbers on the odometer. Just make sure you tell the person who buys it from you about it'Shadow wrote:There's nothing illegal about putting a different odometer in with a different reading. So i did exacly that and never heard a thing after selling it.
Edit: I also asked them to make some sort of note of my enquiry somewhere on my cars rego listing. Whether they did or not....
Coxy321 and CRUSHU - I wonder if thats a state to state difference?
Hang on a minute... you problem is the opposite to mine. The one your putting in has more km's on it which you don't want cos it makes it look like a high KM's POS when you sell it. Now i get it. Ignore my comments, I don't read gooderer after 12h at work. See fester2au's comments

Not sure about the Cruiser, but in the Disco2 the odo is stored in the odo and in the BCU, and if these disagree then the odo flashes to indicate that it has been tampered with.mike_nofx wrote:I thought on newer cars with electronic readout that the km were recorded On the ecu/computer and not the cluster?

that is correct however dash has to be linked to ecu using special computer before anything on the dash will work. This is the same for stereo unit on ba's as well i thinkmike_nofx wrote:I thought on newer cars with electronic readout that the km were recorded On the ecu/computer and not the cluster?
