Really messy question about flanges (4.2 to 2.8)

Post by mud4b »

Hi all.
Im sure i have this in the right section and as much as this does not work like i need it too, i need a answer asap if possible on these 2 questions. Here is a very basic rundown, i have put my st-r navara body, engine, modded navara 3.0 td / 2.8 td gq gearbox onto a 4.2 td lwb rolling chassis.

1. Does anyone know the difference size wise from a 4.2 ( petrol or diesel) to 2.8 td diff flanges / transfer output flanges?

Reason being i need to get rid of the 4.1 diff gears (front air locker) and go at least 4.3 (std navara ratios) or preferred 4.6 ratios, but i need to either cut the middle x member out from the chassis to clear a single piece driveshaft or make a 2 piece driveshaft with center bearing, hence the smaller flange joints / shaft size may suit the 2.8 flanges better than the huge 4.2 shaft flanges..

2. If i go a 2 piece driveshaft, does it need or can i add a slip joint in the rear section?

Any help is appriciated as this part is stuffing me totally and i either need to get this going or buy a crapper as im heading off to the mines soon.

cheers mark.

The gearbox flanges can be interchanged.
ie take the nut off remove the flange slide the other one on, replace nut tighten.
the same on the transfer box and diff pinion.
The spline is the same on the pinion and output of the transfer too.
Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

Hi bud.
thanks for that but i already know that, i was wanting the different sizes (as in how much smaller are they) compaired to the 4.2 flanges..

GQ 2.8 front diff flange is smaller than all (102mm dia)
GQ 2.8 rear diff flange is the same as a GQ 4.2 front (118mm dia)
GQ rear diff flange is bigger than all of them (dont know measurement)

Same goes for transfers

I have a spare 2.8 rear / 4.2 front flange, and a spare 2.8 front flange, and a 2.8 front tailshaft, if it helps in what you want to achieve
