GQ shorty chop jobs
GQ shorty chop jobs
Gday guys,
how many of you have cut down GQ shorties to utes???
Im after ideas for mine.....
I dont want to cut the back completely off like i have done in the past and how i commonly see them done....
I want to keep the whole well back section in tact and simply cut the roof off so it looks like an MQ shorty does when the canopy is off.
Im thinking to run a soft top....
anyone on here done a similar chop? if so pics would be awsome....

rear tailgates lines are about 65 to 75mm difference between MK/MQ and GQ
GQ tailgate fold line lines up with top of taillights
MQ/MK tailgate fold line lines up between brake and indicator lense
screwy,
wats the advantage of doin this as apposed to using an MK/MQ shorty
MK/MQ shortys are real strong around the rear turret section, and can be regoed without canopy
are the GQs strong when the roof section is removed or is there extra bracing required ???
just thought id ask

well the main reason is, that im not interested in a dedicated comp truck only anymore, if i was, a modded MQ body would be my option.nerida67 wrote:rear tailgates lines are about 65 to 75mm difference between MK/MQ and GQ

I currently have a very capable GQ with full road rego and engineers etc which is much bettter on road and offroad then an mq of similar mods and is being used for comp, and also road trips of a distance.... i wont go back to an mq ever again for this type of work..... They are too old for road traveling now that i have been in GQs for so long.....
Your right, GQs dont have the correct roof strength when cut so you need to add a brace or as "moysey" has done, added the rear C piller in forward to give the required strength.
Its a unique mod with not too many GQs with it, and i think it looks neat.......

Would'nt know about roof strength, but mine has a 6 point internal Cage, so i'm not too worried about putting it on it's roof
If i was too cut one myself i'd make it a bit bigger inside, as the seat is right against the rear part of the Cage, and if you're any taller than 5'10ish, you would have trouble sitting in it

thats why i dont have any intention closing off the cab.... if i wanted to close off the cab i would cut the back right off and put a tray on the back....B.D.R wrote:Would'nt know about roof strength, but mine has a 6 point internal Cage, so i'm not too worried about putting it on it's roof

i want it to stay fully open as is just with a soft top running diagonal down. the reason i want to do this is so i can still make use of my 4x4 draws and rear seat if i ever want it back in and stereo equipment....
that and its abit different....

here's a few of mine
its rough i know, but it was never really a daily driver in this state...
standard wheelbase and arms front and rear, soon to be extended front and rear (A-frame rear / 3-link panhard front) with a tube styleside back (no floor)
side on, i went a bit of an extra cab as you can see where the seats are the bit of extra roof was needed (i'm about 6'2" for seat position reference, and they're aftermarket seats on the factory rails and mounts) there is also a taxi bar back there for harness mounts
pics of how the back is
this was another one from up here that Darren Blackburn built or bought or something, no extra cab cut straight at the b-pillar
and a last pic of mine just cause i think its a good photo...
not really exactly what your after but its some more options for the cut, and if we could have made a decent exo and kept the full body i reckon i would have kept it like that... but yeah it was near impossible to make it look decent...

GQ Shorty 4" susp, 2" bod, TD42T, 3" zaust, 35 Radial Claws/36 IROKS, Lockers, BARKODE barwork
Sorry, meant that rear has bottom of barn doors! Behind the seats is folded metal section. Attached to floor at step up to rear section and angled back to give more space inside.Screwy wrote:I like this mate, moysey wrote:This is mine, "C" pillar moved towards front. Just has bottom of barn doors.
