is 33" tyres too much? about to adjust Torsion bars

Post by DanT »

hey everyone
I bought a 4 runner end of last year, fixed it up (new head, wheel bearings/bushes etc)

its got a 22R with an IFS setup, Its got 33" Coopers on it, are they to big for that little engine?

thinking of selling them off to put some 31" tyres on it see if it will run abit better but not sure if i'm just wasteing my money

oh yeah, I was going to ask about Torsio bars but did a bit of search first.

Its got very little travel in the front end, from what i've read that pretty much the norm for IFS its for 2 inch body lift but I think the torsion bars might be wound up. is there any hazard is mucking around adjusting these to find a better balence

or should I just shut up and leave it as it (with 33's) and enjoy what I've got for the short period I have before going O/S

Ive just gone through this decision with my Hilux mate - whether or not to put 33's on it.

Getting 33s to fit is one thing and is the easy part. You then face the issues with the larger diameter messing up your gear ratios - if you dont adjust the ratios your vehicle will struggle to push the tyres - this resulting in larger fuel bills and a loss of power in general.

After doing a tonne of research and getting loads of opinions and help from others ive settled on staying with my 31 inch MTZs and just doing a 2 inch OME suspension lift.

It depends a lot on what you use your vehicle for. 33s are great for hardcore tracks. I only use my vehicle as a tourer for fishing and sand driving so the biggest thing i need is power. 33s were going to cause me a loss in power so hence why i steered away from them.

So in short mate just weigh it all up. If you do a lot of hardcore tracks perhaps stick with the 33s and get your gear ratios adjusted to increase power and bring it all back to normal. If not, keep the gearing as stock and go down to 31s. You should instantly gain power if you do this. Im running 31s on my Lux at the moment with the factory gear ratios and its fine - excellent performance and good milage fuel wise.

My 2 cents worth anyhow mate. Im no expert but have had loads of help with this in recent times so the above is a collation of what everyone has told me.

thanks man

the power loss is the worst thing, this is a novice question but is there a huge difference in the trucks capability if I got bush with 31s rather then 33s?

it just means you'll lose about an inch of clearance under the rear diff/front stub axles. So unless you are driving on tracks with really deep wheel ruts it isn't going to a great loss to capability. I went up to cruiser park with a few mates in my lux mate had his, mine had 31s his had 33s, mine went everywhere his went

oh true,

just been having a look its appears a past owner has had a 2" OME lift and also put 2" chassis lift in, there is heaps of room in the wheel arch.

last time I had the it out I struggled to get up tracks because the front end would end up hanging in the air with no flex left in the suspension

If that is the case a locker would be next on the cards, it will help when wheels start lifting

Somtimes the right tyre placement can make all the difference... I stsrted with 31's on my 40. just put 33's on and wouldn't go back for off road use... on road... the old girl sounds like a aeroplane flying low over my head... but as it was already geared pretty low the taller tyres made all the difference...

On road I prefer the 31's. for better on road grip comfort and they are quieter...

Off road... 33 jungle trekker 2
On road ... 31 Cooper ATR's
Mine: A Tough little fj40
and a 105 series diesel
Hers: TJ Jeep Wrangler... Stock
Cheers Eric
