The higher cold cranking amps are definately better but if you use this battery then use the largest wires you can get to run the winch as you'll get a current drop over the longer leads. If its not for competition use then it won't be essential to use the larger batteries if you remember to wind up your revs a little if you're winching so that the alternator keeps charging. ;)

Always run your winch from your main battery especially if you have duel battery controler system.

yea found that out the hard way cris ... the battery isolated gets scared when you put heavy load through the second battery and cuts off the charge ... drains it pretty quick...

Im with cris run ya winch off ya main battery.

Deep cycle batteries can not sustain winching loads. They are designed for slow discharge, slow recharge so the fast discharge / recharge caused by winching will shorteh the life span.
Gell batteries are OK, I'm talking about lead acid batteries.

I was lead to believe that the gel cells can get "bubbles" in the gel ? when they are subjected to high discharge rates, ending up with less contact with the plates overall.

Problem is also that you are trying to pull 300+ amps through your tiny duel batterry charging system. Not good if it is not designed for it.

Gell aka Orbit are starting batteries and a winch is just a starter motor so prodices the same drawn. (relative to motor size etc) If a gell cell was to get bubbles then it isn't doing as designed.
Can't argue as I just use good old fasioned sealed lead acid batteries. They last are cheap and seem to be more forgiving.

I am only going on what I have been told (this is for deep cycle batteries not orbitals\optima style) .. I can only afford a lead acid battery..

Anyone know for sure ?
