Can the rear main oil seal on a V8 motor be easily changed by just prising out the old one and tapping a new one it? or does the rear main bearing cap have to be taken off (meaning sump off)?

Sump off fella,
Ranuki and myself did mine not long ago. Engine MUST come out or box off. Also make sure you buy new rubber T pieces for the side of the mains cap. Selastic fills that but I'm not sure for how long...

If its the one piece seal then it can be replaced without removing the sump, i did my 81'RR 8 years ago, but you need to move the donk forward and remove the flywheel / flexplate to get to it. Unbolt everything, remove the rad and lift the engine and pull forward you then should have enough room to get to the seal.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

Most of the rangie eng are machine fit. do away with most gaskets when you re-do, the sump gasket is one you can loose. very important to replace guide seal or you are wasting your time changing the mains. also use new side seals as the old ones always start leaking after a short while if you don't.
