Toyota Hilux Gearbox/transfer case compatibilities

Post by mallen101 »

Hello All,

I have a 83 RN46 Toyota Hilux 4WD with a 18r engine that I use as my work ute.
Recently the engine died, so I purchased a 81 Celica with a 18rc engine and a Alloy 5 speed. I think the model is a W58 Gearbox but that hasn't been confirmed as yet.
I would like to put this gearbox into the Hilux but I've been told that I will have issues connecting this with the transfer case. Now from what I have seen in my research I may have the option of either finding a transfer case that will fit possibly from a later model Hilux or have a adapter plate made up if there is such a thing.
Also if anybody knows will I definitely need to have the tail shaft shortened?
I have also been told that the RN46 Hilux did come out with the option of a 5 Speed but can't really find anything on this.

Anywho all/any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Sorry to bump but surely someone has a W58 Celica/Supra 5 speed Alloy gearbox in their Hilux?

All I need to know is the transfer case you're using...

sorry to burst the bubble but 18r celicas cam out with steel case box they went to alloy case when the ra 60 came out it had either 22r 21r 20r or 2sfe engine

gearbox is not compatable any way the back end is all wrong

what you need is to go out and buy a hilux gearbox that has the transfer on it these are g series box then you can use a 22r bellhousing to bolt it to your box can be a 2wd or 4wd bellhousing

Hey Buddy,

Thanks for the reply.

I should of said this in the previous post, I do know that's not the original gearbox for the celica and it's definitely an alloy gearbox. I don't think the engine is the celica's original either as I don't think that car came out with a 18rc maybe a 18r.

Anyway are you saying that the alloy gearbox isn't compatible of that the steel gearbox isn't compatible? As I have definitely the alloy one?

Cheers

Matt

thats right alloy or not it will not bolt in to a transfer you would have to do quite a few mods and pull the box apart to replace output shaft also parts would cost more than getting the right box

the right box with transfer should be able to be had for 500 bucks

Hi Matt,
I had same project as you are. I got 1 JZ (supra) and trying to fit its gearbox to 1KZ gearbox transfer case.
I heard some one here succeed fit 1 JZ (r154) gearbox manual front end matted to 1 JZ gear box rear end incl transfer case.
Before starting doing this project, do you think it is Ok ?
