Nitrous is very violatile , i have seen a mates car bonnet go 30 ft in the air after switching the car off to collect timing slip , NOS still armed , hit the key and boom !!! lifted the bonnet ( fibreglass ) skyward
It done alot of damage to the top half ( inlet manifold , carby ) of the motor as the bottom end was tuff as chuck norris on steroids .

looks like it starts as a fuel fire in the carbs , hence the cloths over it . he may have thought it was out then hit the ignition with NOS still armed and BOOM !! . fuel lines torn off will spray fuel everywhere

I didn't think it was flamable either. I always thought nos shrank fuel so you could squeeze more fuel into the cylinders to get a bigger bang.
