hey guys,
may not be able to get to a mates house to put my lokka into my diff center.
so as i need a dial indicator to check the run out of the ring gear and to make sure the back lash is set correctly, and i dont have a dial indicator, i may need to take it to some one,
i have everything needed, new bearings for the pinion, and new carrier bearings, new seals, where could i take it and walk away knowing they have installed it correctly. close to footscray melbourne.
diff is out of the housing, so all that is required, is taking the diff apart, putting in the new stuff, and setting the run out and back lash, i will take it home and pt in housing and fit my wheel bearings.
so without them having to remove diff, and axles, or source parts, i should be looking at a cheeper job yes?? i would normally not be to fussed, but the whole reason i am doing as much as possible myself is one to know my car, and two i have the skills, but not the tools(dial indicator) for this job. if i was still at trade school i could borrow one. but the main reason is moneys tight, but my 75 has been off the road for nearly 2 months, and the missues is walking to the train station and its a bit cold for that so i want my car back so she can have hers, so as i have the parts ready to go i dont want to wait any longer than this weekend.
sorry for the rant.
Alistair

ok, what i do need to know, is backlash, my manual does not tell me what i am to do, it tells me the specification, but nto how to test it?
if i am correct, it is the play in the meshing between the ring gear and the pinion,
so holding the pinion so it canot move, and then moving the ring gear back and forth it should only have .15mm - .2mm play???
it tells me how to adjust it, but not where i should be measuring
i hjave read through all the locker installation instructions, they are straight forward, i have put it all together, (dry on the kitchen bench) so i know how it all goes, and have studdied the insturctions so i know what i am up for. it really all comes down to the backlash in the diff...
i have new bearings for everything,
cheers guys

As you said you hold the pinion to stop it moving and rock the crownwheel back and forth with the dial guage point resting on the crownwheel teeth than ajust to acceptable backlash as specified in manual. Dont forget to blue gears after setting backlash to make sure they are meshing correctly.
