Blanchard grinding (heaps more tables for sale on grays)

Post by bru21 »

Does anyone in qld offer this service at a reasonable price.

I have a bit of 20mm x 1500x1600 plate I would like to weld to a 100 x 50 frame then get ground.

Seeing as the buggy is on hold till the shed is built.

End up with something like this:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthre" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... ght=bender

Or can you buy pre-ground plate?

cheers bru

The benches in those photos have been machined. I dunno about the rest of QLD, but around brissy there's fark all places that would be able to machine a plate that size. Only 1 that I know of, and we get things machined pretty regularly. Looking at close to a grand, and a couple of weeks wait.

Don't know of anyone.
I did speak to an engineer about it some time ago aparantly theres a bit more to it than just the surface machining. Theres heat treating involved too. As with out the plate will not stay true.
Guess you would need to talk to an engineering joint with a bloody big milling machine.

Another option would be to find a second hand engineering machine dealer. Or engineering machine salvage yard and just buy the bed off of a machine past its usable life.
I used to use an old milling machine bed for an adjustale jig.
Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

Yep - that's flat

What do you want to build that needs to be that flat?

buggy. and other things.

Don't really need it - but I love raising the bar each time I fabricate.
I see this as the next step.

Bah, it won't be square after you drop it on it's lid anyway, or after so much effort, will it be road only?

mm there was a place down archerfield way that use to do it, will see if I still have their card. SHort of that give APE a call and ask them as they are in the area and have been around for a long time.

I will let you know if I find it when I get home.

When I did my time it was called SNOW or PLOW grinding. Its like a verticle borer with a segmented wheel that grinds on the side of the wheel while the table turns. These are not the most accurate of grinders but probably good enough for a fab table.

Some places that do large engine or head reconditioning may be able to help, or posably people that sharpen large blades. Maybe a company that does engine reco work for ships.

I know of some places that could mill it but not grind a peice that big in Brisbane. Also verticle lathes can do it too.

Wash grinding is allowing the wheel to keep traveling over the surface until it stops removing material, "Wash out". This allows for any clearance in bearings when after a surper high tolerence.

APE that was mentioned above is Archerfeild precision engineering. There are a few APE's in the world that offer different services.

I drew a dead end on the grinding - in Bris they can only grind small pieces - so 14 would be needed, then they cannot get them to even thickness without 4x$$$ so I would have to shim each one.
Place in Melb can do the full sheet - buy its a several $K exercise - so I put it on the back burner....

When suddenly....

I managed to score a 75mm thick 1500x1200 surface table woot woot.

Pick it up in a few weeks.

Got it for half of what my 20mm 1500x 1600 table cost me.

I have a mental list of about 10 major tools I am after and check 3 times a week for the list. I only buy exactly what I want - that way I don't waste $ or tie up money for when something perfect comes up. I look on Grays, ebay, gumtree and google search. You have to look hard though as its not the US, and manufacturing is long dead here. and most of the gear for sale is Asian crap. As for tables - this is the second one I have seen for under 5k, - I paid $600!

Please excuse my ignorance, but what are these tables used for and why do they need to be so accurate?

I used to machine & deck large plate surfaces at my old work. We had a very large Vertical borer & I had to deck stuff for Luduwici test bed. The biggest I did was 1.8m x 1.2m
I would use a 320mm 24 tip cutting to bring the material down to within 0.3mm of finish, then fly cut to finish size. Had to be a 1.6 finish. To machine finish cut took nearly 4hrs. But Borer was sold about 6mths ago , new Plasma was moving in when I left.
The finish tolerance had to have less than 0.2mm deflection in face. Usually got 1/2 that. Worst thing was if a tip chipped. You had to start all over again

It aids in getting a project dead flat.

For example, my tt will be built in 3 layers - each built on the table, then joined vertically later.
So all tubes are placed on the table, clamped down hard then TIG welded.

Here is one in use when my chassis was built:

And.. Brooksy was that in QLD? Everywhere I called said a place in Melbourne was the only solution!

Yeah it was at my old workshop in Carol Park but they sold the borer to make way for a giant CNC Plasma

well this has raised its ugly head again!
I want to grind the sheet I have to free up the surface table for component welding.

Quote from Melbourne is $140 to grind my sheet. So cheap!
Problem is that it's bigger than a pallet so even using our rates (move a semi a day) it's a $400 freight exercise.

There has to be a rotary wash grind in qld!
Someone must know of one!

Ideally, I grab another 1600x1200x20 sheet, get both ground and the entire chassis will have a home, so someone local would be awesome.

The guy in Brendale is 900mm max so that's out.

Cheers bru
