Hey, as the topic says, I'm looking to replace my G52 5speed tranny soon, and was thinking of using the W56 as they are what was originally behind my engine. I've got a 3rz in a 4runner that is bolted to the original G52 which is now growing tired, and with the prospect of a turbo being fitted soon, I'll probably need a tranny that can handle a bit more power.
If I get a W56 tranny with transfer case attached, should this bolt straight in? I'm thinking yes, but just thought I'd ask in case anyone had actually done this.
Thanks,
Simon

Replace G52 with W56 trans

G52 and W56 bolt up the same mate, they aint much different in strengh and both are renowned for popping 5th gear.........
I had a 2.8 turbo intercooled hilux and when i blew the G52 i found a W56 out of a late 80's surf which was behind a 2LT engine. blew it within 4 weeks, i went through a few more before i done some research and put in a R151 box from a V6 4 runner (supra internals). Marks adaptors came up with the bellhousing to suit and i was away for under 2 grand ( box was 1100 bucks and the bellhousing was 400 ) do it right do it once mate, i never had a drama again.

You can use a toyota bellhousing to mate a r series box to a 3rz, depending on the model of box it needs a 36mm spacer. 2TRFE box i think its called its from the hilux's/prado's with vvti 2.7s, no they are not 3rz's.
So your popping 5th gear with a 2.8 turbo diesel in numerous box's, i dont know how anyone breaks box after box with a 2.8 turbo diesel.
The W56 box will need a chain driver transfer or an adaptor to make the gear driven transfer work.
If you have no clutch control or skill you'll break most box's if you turbo the 3rz, mine on 12psi made 1050ftlbs of torque. That 1050ftlbs has been behind a g52 for months and been driven like a stolen VN and is fine, its all how you treat the gear changes etc.

So what your saying is i can't drive, your a dick!!! G52's are renowned for blowing 5th gear hence there are so many people on forums asking about swapping them out..... my old lux had 607nm of torque and 146 hp at 4 wheels with a dyno sheet from northside 4x4 to prove it......... ive even blown 1 from coming onto boost in 2nd gear (no clutch or gear changing) just foot down hard in 2nd and bang....Majority of Breakages to 5th are going down the Highway at a 110kmh, 5th gear turns into a nutral gear... So before you go running your mouth get your facts right and go and ask any gearbox rebuilder or hilux owner....berad wrote:You can use a toyota bellhousing to mate a r series box to a 3rz, depending on the model of box it needs a 36mm spacer. 2TRFE box i think its called its from the hilux's/prado's with vvti 2.7s, no they are not 3rz's.

I took the bait, n i'll bite and stoop to the level of "my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard".
So you just dropped it upto leon and threw cash at it or what? haha
No i wasn't saying you cant drive, depends alot on how theyve been treated and no there not the strongest box, but ive never heard of 5th blowing out although im not a "hilux mechanic" , i dont know how you turn it into neutral unless you've loaded the gear up that much and then the turbo spools up and throws a bucketload of torque onto the gear with the least amount of teeth = weak, out of the 20??? hiluxs that are like my sisters boyfriends cousins aunties mates i havnt heard of 5th going.
Haha dont take stuff to heart, especially when i never said your sh!t at it. Everyones ready to punch everyone through the keyboard over a bit of constructive critism
Nup, dont know any hilux drivers, dont know any and espesially with rare g52's.
PS. you didnt have 600nm of torque, you had 600ft lbs of torque. I'd like to see the sheet showing 600nm, chassis dyno's dont measure nm, they measure ft lbs/tractive force. So get YOUR facts right .
PPS,I know they break 2nd although USUALLY when shifting into 2nd or into 3rd because the bearing is about as big as a spigot bearing haha.
haha 146hp, wow, well my d!cks bigger than yours heres my sheet with another 110hp on you and only revving it to 4900rpm, dont know if you can read it or you just pay someone but the a/f ratios are a tad on the lean side at 4700 resulting in the opposite to what is normally wanted powerwise. On a basic backyard tune first time even looking at the software of a aftermarket ecu, It hasn't blown g52s everywhere, runnin 35s daily on road.
Said it before said it again, i didnt say anyone couldn't drive, driving style is driving style.
Shoot me a pm and ill send u a 9 min video of it being driven as hard as you could possibly drive a car in 4 hi running a moto circuit, to the point where the centre housing studs stretched and was p!ssing oil when it went across the finish, and a water temp that was better just not to look at the guage, but the box still survived, could have broken, expected it to, but the talk to any hilux owner or arsehat mechanic they'll tell ya.
In no shape or form are they "strong", but anyone who says driving style has nothing to do with longevity of drivetrain components is a wank3r.
And theres another box that will bolt on thats up there in strength with the 151 but these boxs aren't 15 years old and it costs around 800 but you dont need a $400 adaptor, but you'll be able to research or ask all the hilux owners and full sick mechanics what box it is.

G52's rare you say? They were behind almost every hilux engine from 1984 to 1997 and from there after on a few.............There are millions of them out there...... they are just the standard 5 speed.
What happens to 5th gear ?? ok here it is, 5th gear is located right at the back of the shaft and all that holds it there is a circlip. majority of standard hilux's run less than 60hp at the wheels and bugger all torque.
when your labouring in 5th or on boost in 5th or just old what happens is that circlip breaks and falls down into your box and 5th gear slides down the shaft, hence the nuatral gear because your selecting into nothing. alot of people i know actually weld that circlip in place.
Sorry for being rude mate there was no need for it, but the g52's are renowned for being week they really are, you must have a freek box because i seriously don't understand why you havn't blew one yet. especially with them dyno figures. I am a diesel fitter and have reasonable knowledge on most toyota box's. bugger the hilux's anyway i reckon, my current build up is a 12HT in a 75 series ute (azz you can see i'm a diesel freek)

g52's arent rare, sarcasm doesn't come out in text haha.
I'm not the only one who hasn't broken heaps of them, they aren't strong, but the 5 people i know for a fact that they cop punishment day in day out or in the bush driving round like they stole it, among others that arent modified or driven around like a go kart, and has been 1 go.
Lots of people have broken them, 2nd hand parts can't talk, it could be on its last legs when people buy them, but when you said you've broken 4,5,6? with 140hp i had to add my 2cents. haha
You'll be able to go give leon a run in the patrol then hey haha.

mine were never old i was just exchanging them for $550 a pop, the guy used to just fix them up with second hand parts and throw new seals and bearings in them.
