rear end walking woes.....

Post by slo78u »

Guys i have a 90 GQ patrol wagon.

nothing to flash. 2 inch lift and 33's (AT's) - still have front and rear swaybars. suspension is only 18 months old. lovell springs, dobson shocks.

i have a real problem that appears to be getting worse.

when cruising along the freeway at 110 if i lift off throttle sharply the rear of the car will move right turning me left ( to the point where i have to counter steer to stay in my lane) and if i get on the gas sharply at 110 the rear will move left turning me right.

I have checked all my bushes and the panhard rod bushes. nothing seams loose. it's all done up and when i wedge a screwdriver in i can hardly move any of the bushes ( so they haven't separated )

need help !!

cheers
James

i didn't post it there because it's not nissan specific.

more to do with anything that has a panhard rod and trailing arms in the rear.

sorry if that makes no sense. mods feel free to move if you think it's a nissan thing only.

thanks

Mine does it a bit too, I thought it was just something you live with when you have big lift and the suspension geometry being out of spec. Obviously not. I'm only speculating but I think perhaps it may have something to do with the LSD. Though mine is not super tight, it is rather good off road compared to others. In my 45 series which had a detroit rear (at first), I broke the DS axle studs and after I pulled over and removed the axle, I simply drove it home. When I accelerated, it definitely pushed the car to the right more and left when decelerating.

Anyone else with ideas?

How about the bushes at the chassis end of the control arms? That's where my problem was - one nut had backed off a couple of turns  , which was quickly diagnosed and fixed (for free :D ) by my friendly ARB store owner.

Thanks John. :D

Actually come to think of it, I had one start clunking on our trip to Kroombit last Sunday. That coupled with a shockie mount nut falling off too (god bless zippy ties!).

thanks guys.

i thought it may have been the shocks and springs so i replaced them. it went away but it's back in less than 12 months so i guess it's something else.

i'll order a set of new bushes and press them in and see how we go.

really got nothing to loose. it's even worse towing a trailer with a car on it. like really fucking scary worse.

thanks

Most likely to be rear lower control arm bushes allowing the diff to move back and forth sort of steering the car. It won't be the top bushes unless they are REALLY shagged!!

Either rear lower bushes or Panhard bushes. But panhards are usually more noticable all the time, not just on accel or decel..

Bushes AND angle of arms.
If you have a radical lift the angle of the arms to the ground changes more with small load changes ie: accel / decell causing bump steer.
Check panhard too.

Yeah but if you'd read the OP properly you'd know he's only got a 2" lift so it's not the arm angles..

you need to physically take your arms out and check your bushes..what you can move with them done up and the car sitting still is not what they will move with a 2.5 tonne car accelerating and braking..

it could also be the bolt holes in the mounts flogged out if the arms came loose at any time and elongated them

thanks for the help guys.

i'll pull the arms out this weekend and get some new bushes if need be.

they feel alright by wiggling a screwdriver in them but i guess it's a different story when it's all undone.

thanks
