Will it fit???? 1.6 and auto into Sierra

Post by jtraf »

Just wondering if anyone knows whether a 1.6lt efi and 3sp auto from an early Vitara would fit into a SWB 1.3lt 5sp sierra. Motor I am looking at is single point efi 8v with auto as a complete package. Problem is I am too far away to measure and I am pretty sure it would be the same as a naturally aspirated 1.6 auto that was avaliable here around early 90's

How much longer is this combo than the orginal sierra setup.

I reckon if it fits it would quite a good conversion.

cheers

It will fit ..
Its actually shorter than the 1.3, 5 speed and transfer case. but you may need to "massage" the tranny tunnel to make it fit width wise. The other issues you may run into are friveshaft clearance on the auto trans sump as well as gearing, The Vit has a 1:1 high range gearing and compensates for this with much deeper gears in the diffs ( I think the ratio for the autos was a 4.8 or 4.6 in the diffs) They also have a much higher low range than the sierra with just 1.9:1 reduction ..

If you have a vit auto minus the T\case your laughing .. it would be easy to use the sierra T/case as well ... would be a sweet setup ..

The early vit auto was suposedly a GM TH180 , if this is the case it will have a removable bellhousing ,and by rights bolt striaght to the TH180
Of the holden variety, so in theory 1600vit vit 3 speed auto bell, holden trimatic . This would be a normal output like the seirra ,

It is a TH180 .. dunno if the bolt pattern etc is the same ..

The later 4 speed is the 3l80 or whatever .. same as the 4 speed auto in the early bommadores ..

The TH180 has a removable bellhousing The bolt pattern on the gearbox case itself should be the same , I know i can bolt a th180 rover vertise v8
bell to a holden , 4 6 8 cyl trimatic, a gemini 1600 trimatic , so it should
be the ticket , I think there was a guy on here somwhere that reckons hes done the vit tri thing to a holden starfire four 1900 cc , so would be just the reverse i would think ,. One thing though the input shafts are diferent on the 8s, but they can actually put the v8 clutch packs ect in any of the later tri boxs i have been told .

The latter one 3l80 is a common nissan type ?
This the Jatco thing ?
Ruff was telling me one of the jatco boxs is a copy of a c4 , with an extension to house the planetary for the 4th gear  not sure though.
