2.8 rebuild
2.8 rebuild
hey im in the process of rebuilding my 2.8 after my timming belt slipped causing one of my valves on cylinder one to just tap the top of the piston. dosent look like to much damage has been done but the head is going in on friday to be checked over, fingers crossed. but my question is does any one no where i can get non genuine pistons/rings. theres a kit on ebay but i dont really want to go that way. hopefully (depending on head cost) i should get away with it for under $1500 doing everything myself.
Eng Aus, 1300 364 463
Should be fairly cheap. but having rebuilt a few RD's the cranks crack sometimes.
I did a customers after a t-belt failure, pistons rings, brg, head o-haul, basic in chassie rebuild. Only to have it spin No. 2 bigend after only 800klm. Apon dis-assembly of eng sent crank out and was cracked at the journel, Under load the crack opened up and just scraped away the bearing intil it spun!!!
LESSON LEARNED, Even though it seemed to be a simple head and rings job it did cost me money and time. Then chasing a 2nd hand crank went through 4 and they were all cracked.
Hope all goes well, give engs aust a ring they seem to be good. I got a complete SD33T kits with liners and all for 900$
Just my 2 cents worth

How damaged is the piston?
If its only just 'touched' and the piston crown height is the same as the others (IE checking your rods / crank are not bent) and it turns over freely, then just dress it up to get the sharp bits off around the dent and away you go. Dont even pull the engine apart.
People pay good money for fly cut pistons for valve clearance!
Other than that there are plenty of 2.8's for sale - just grab another. Often you can get to test drive them in the car before you buy
