FJ62 Ignition problems, please help

Post by Stubbs »

G'day, I have an '85 FJ62 cruiser and I have been having a few problems lately. First of all, it was starting to run rough and spitting out unburnt fuel so it wasn't sparking all cylinders then a couple of weeks ago it wouldn't start at all.

It has quite a lot of k's on it so I wanted to change most of the ignition parts anyway so now I have changed the spark plugs, the ignition coil, the ballast resistor, the condenser and the points and set all the gaps according to a workshop manual. The leads were already near new.

Now with testing, I am getting the right power from the positive and negative of the coil on accessories and when cranking but there is no spark from the lead to the dizzy when cranking except for one spark when stopping cranking.

If anyone can help with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Stubbs

On most points type ignition systems the coil get two powers; one is 12v on start and one 9v on run. Sounds to me that the 12v on start is missing.
Those who choose to drive in the mud do so because they can't drive the rocks.

I havn't checked the actual volts but the positive of the coil has a constant power and then flashes brighter when cranking so i am pretty sure that's working ok

check to make sure the points arnt dirty i know there new but still have a film on them when packeged

also with ign on open and close the points with a screwdrive and see if you get an ark at the points theis means they are switching andsupplying to the coil

oh ....check the way you put the pointas and condenser to dizzy as ive done it before put the tab behind the insulator caused a short

with ignition on and testing with screwdriver to open and close the points it did spark so my understanding was that means its not earthing out at the condensor because then it wouldn't spark as its already got an earth

no it should spark as its the switch for the ign voltage to the coil turning each cly on and of to create spark timing

Problem all sorted out now, ended up being a bypass wire on the wrong terminal of the ignition coil

Thanks to all who tried to help out with ideas

Yeah, I got that you saw a vehicle....not sure how that relates to this thread? What I was actually referring to is this:
