Zol i moved this to Toyota from Wanted because it has now become a Tech post and you obviously dont need the calipers anymore. This is some good tech and should provide a few others some info on doing this job themselves.
Ruff
Hi
I'm in desperate need of some IFS front callipers from any 90's model 4runner & up that uses vented rotors.
I'm in the blacktown area but will travel anywhere in Sydney.
i sold a set to a mate bout 2 months ago and he still hasnt paid for em so i might have em back tomorrow coz he hasnt used em yet.......................so ill let you know
I wonder if it's gonna make a difference in steering once I widen the track.
I know it will help as leverage for flex
Zol you do realise that the IFS disks and calipers dont just bolt straight on dont you?
yeah Ruff
Apparently I need to cut the spacer down a bit & stuff around with the splash plate too.
The spacers have been machined & put together. And I picked up some brake pads as well for the new callipers.
Is there anything else that I've missed?
Oh yeah...I need to pick up a set of new oil seals as the ifs ones don't fit. Neither does the locking hub from the ifs so I just need to put the old ones on
NICK wrote:it will make no differance, you wont even know they are in there bar the fact that the tyres sit out about 2 inch either side of the guard.
NICK
Yeah maybe you're right Nick.
BUT
I'm assuming that stability in curves will make a dif & oversteer will dissappear a bit as I already have a wider dif in the rear so it tends to hook a bit too much in curves cause the front is narrower.
Before you go to far with it. The IFS caliper wont bolt onto the Solid axle hub as the bolt spacing is different. And the spacer that is needed is a totaly custom spacer that has been machined to bolt onto the IFS hub but still take the Solid axle disk.
I think you need to talk to Nick or Cplux before you go too far with this as both of them have done this conversion and it gets fairly costly.
The only part of the IFS gear you will use for the swap is the Hub on its own and there is no mods needed to the backing plate.
ruff is correct, the only ifs stuff u can use, without alot of frigging around is the actual wheel hub to which you bolt your Rotor spacer to and then rotor. My steering was not affected noticibly and stability now is far improved, be aware but that your scrub radius will increase alot, Dirtpigs and I found this out today when i was touching the back of my wheel well at full flex up a huge rock. I have axle 1.5" forward as well with 5" lift and 2" body lift.
I'm sure you're right Ruff with some of the Calliper paterns . Though I've got 2 diferent callipers from an Ifs & they both of them line up with the mounting holes.
Maybe I should explain what I've done.
I had a non vented rotor in the front tha was warped & unevenly worn. Had a friend that works for DBA so I organised some rotors from the vented series. Got them.
Next was to get the Hub from an ifs which I did. i only found one Calliper to go with it.
Next was to custom make a set of spacers which I got from Chaos.
The mods tha I had to do was:
The big seal with the plate backing that bolts against the stone guard. It was trimmed so that the new rotor doesn't scrub. It fit perfectly.
Next I needed to trim the stoneguard around the calliper section to fit the calliper in. Holes matched up perfect.
The only problem I have now is that the pad doesnt sit over the rotor %100. Which I knew would happen but not as severe. Today I'm gonna try & see if I can grind the valley out of my old callipers to make it sit true.
But so far I've assembled one side.
if anyone has suggestions about the pads sitting in line let me know.
i used late model vented hilux rotors and early 80series calipers (which i believe may be same as hilux ones, my calipers fit perfect no adjustments necessary, as did backing plates and all seals except for using a solid axle one for the hub. are you using ifs rotors?? if so that is why your calipers wont fit perfectly they are smaller in dia than solid ones. if not it must be cos the holes on the ifs rotors are slightly different.
Chaos are selling the spacers for $ 190 a pair, although this might change as we have come to a bit of a hick-up with Zol's when he found his rotor's were to small in diameter by about 10mm and the other rotors have a different backspacing from the hubface. There are also different types of rotor for the front varying in diameter and disk thickness.
Well it's been an interresting day of tinkering. Thanks Hophoar for coming over & playing with tools with me. Though we spent most of the time speculating. But we came up with a conclusion.
This is how it stands. I've been missinformed about the rotors. i thought that you use ifs rotors. I got them before I started this thread. So now i have a brand new set of DBA Slotted rotors that I can't return & can't use.
I have to buy another set today that are different AGAIN. This vented rotor is the same diameter as my original non-vented one....302mm BUT it's 25mm thick across the braking wall. The offset is gonna be different too I assume so I might need to re-machine the spacer. Dunno yet...will keep you posted. Though....The offset on the height of the rotor is different too. It's 45mm
I also now have 3 diferent callipers. Each set has different size valleys where the rotor runs. I'm assumin that the IFS ones are the go. They all fit & sit true.
I've placed it together temporarily to see what it's like even though the pad hangs over about 10mm.
I can tell you that it's fantastic. There is a very noticable difference.
Improvements:
-Much more stable
-Handling improvement.
-Softer ride
-Less tracking
-No oversteer
-Much better braking by a longshot
- No tyre rub...Yet...we'll see on the track.
I've measured the track from outside wheel edges & it sits at 74inches exactly on both front & rear.
Even though I've stuffed up & waisted money on brand new rotors....I'm very happy with what I've got from it 7 would recommend it for sure. Even though it's no quite fished,,,I'd say that it will be a tiny bit better but generally speaking it's close
After Speaking with Lochlan today, they have come up with a spacer that is similar to a wheel spacer in that it has 2 sets of bolts and uses a solid axle vented rotor. One set of holes will accept recessed capscrews that bolt the spacer to the hub and another set of threaded holes that bolt the rotor to the spacer. Price will be @ $ 290 a pair.

there is an even easier way, but now that you stoners have fawked around for awhole weekend i wont bother, the job start to finish, including making the hubs and fitting them is a 4 hour job.
but that said, at $290 they will sell a shit load of them and if i needed them, and couldnt have got them cheaper i would have got a set, so people by them now before they increase in price.
Nick i agrea with the way yours were done but for CHAOS to sell them they need to be direct bolt on which with 12holes they will be and this way they dont need to supply the disk as well.

that is 100% true, but if they had listened to you me and craig from the start they would have saved themselves so much time and hassel.
They were $190 a pair before they realised that they had made the first set wrong and now they realise how they need to be made there is a bit more work involved.
I gave a mate my spare 1984 solid axle housing for his SAS into a 1991 surf. After it was all setup we fitted the IFS hubs. The IFS calipers bolted straight onto the factory mounts.
Then got a spacer made to push the IFS disk back to the right place... only cost $35 for 2 spacers and $20 for new bolts, job done ???
We only used parts from his IFS stuff that was cut out ??
I'll try and get some pics in the next couple of days, maybe we were lucky with the bits all fitting together ?
I have just picked up some more parts ( 1987 wide rear axle housing, 2 IFS whole front ends inclusing disks, calipers etc and the IFS power steer box. only paid $150 for the lot ) anyway I will get see if the hubs, calipers etc are the same as the ones above ??
