GU Wagon body lift question
GU Wagon body lift question
Finally got my GU 4.2. It is a late 99 TD42T and I was hoping to raise the body 2". Can this be done without affecting the drivers airbag and is there much different to the GQ. Thanks

Yeah. I'm curious why you'd want to put a body lift in a GU. Its really not required to fit larger rubber and it just makes the center of gravity higher. Just a 3-4in lift is all thats required to fit much larger rubber under the guards and it will ride and handle much nicer. All the mods that you may have done or heard of for a GQ in the past don't count for a GU.

It is perfectly legal to body lift a gu with airbags in qld , all you have to do is get the right form from dot and apply in writing stating what materials u will be using eg. High tensile bolts, blah blah, then they send u back the letter sayying if they approve or not, then u do the body lift and get it inspected over the pits where they go over the whole vehicle not just the body lift and if it passes they stamp the letter of approval and u keep it in the vehicle, this is what I went through to get mine passed and I also know of abrand new hilux with air bags on the 4wd action forum that has been passed. And before anyone asks why body lift? Its for a duramax conversion.

I am surprised regarding the feedback for body lift. I know that a GQ is different but I was quite happy with the 2' lift combined with the 2' suspension lift and 35's as they worked well and they only thing they could get me for was the 35's however they were only used for weekends and Fraser.
In regards to legality in QLD, is a 4" suspension lift legal considering all the other mods you have to do to cater for it and do you have to do any other mods to fit 35's under it.

It is way less modification to do a 4in lift in a GU than doing a body lift. As for engineering it is also easier to get someone to engineer the 4in lift than the body lift for the same reasons. All you need to do for a 4in lift is extended brake lines and caster correction. Maybe extended bump stops if your shocks are longer than they are. Then get your car engineered for the lift and tires at the same time then no worries from the law.

4 inch cannot be engineered in qld it is a maximum of 2 inch susp or 2 inch body or both combined. It is surprisingly not that hard to body lift a gu wagon it took me a day in my garage with 3 jacks by myself, raising the bullbar and rear bar was a bit of a hassle and took another half a day, I didn't have to do anything with the gear levers only had to redrill holes for the handbrake cable and pull the bottom 50 mm of the radiator shroud but in saying all that I would prefer not to have a body lift if I didn't need it.
You're allowed 50mm total without engineering. You can get more than that engineered in QLD. Funnily enough the ADR's don't specify directly with suspension lifts. Only with suspension drops. It may have changed in the last couple of years though.
I went through all of this with my race truck up in Townsville. I spoke with the engineers before doing any mods on my truck which saved me a whole lot of trouble later on. So your best bet is to talk to an engineer before you make the changes and then you'll have no problems when it comes to get the certificate whichever way you go.

Engineer can say it is safe but he cannot make it legal.
The max you can legally do in QLD is 2' suspension & 2" bodylift & 15mm increase in the tyres. [Just read the DOT brochure ] spells it all out.
I know there many fourbys in QLD with 4" & even 6" lifts but they are not legal & run the risk of being defected .
