4.5 landcruiser engine
hi every one, looking to buy a 100 series at the moment has a few ks on it, cant afford a turbo diesel so petrol will have to do 4 now. just wanted to know what sort of kms you get out of the 4.5 petrol motors or if people could tell me if they have high mileage ones and what sort of problems they have had, any input would be great, the one im looking at has 260 xxx and wat sort of kms the diffs and gear boxs get?? thanks for your help
from all reports they will go forever if looked after... i pulled my 4.5 out at 290k and it was still going strong...
have seen others that get THRASHED and have 400 + on them, and still going strong... only common fault that i have seen is valve stem seals.. but thats more of an annoyance than a problem..

I've got no probs with mine with 280,000 + on the clock. Only put it on LPG 6 months ago. Goes great but thursty. I get around 270km's on 68L of LPG. M valve stem seals are leaking and have done since I bought it.
Strong motor and should last for ages.

Mine has 360 on it and appears to have been a tow truck. has electric brake controller and all 4brake rotors were out of round. Still pulls ok though. I guestimate there's about 186 of the original 212 horses still under the hood. I don't think it's making full power and it's a little smokey (valve stems). All in all i'd say that's still a good run for any big petrol motor.
I think biggest problem you're likely to find is worn valve seats from running lpg.
as for the rest of it, the manual gear boxes rarely break, and the bearings can hold up well over 500k if the oil is looked after. but the syncros are more likely a problem. Toyota never really made a decent 5spd manual. The diffs aren't the strongest point of the car either.
But these cruisers are just like any car. when you look at it look for a tight drive line that doesn't make any noises. gearboxes, transfers, diffs etc will give plenty of warning before failure.

The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
I have 330 odd on mine now, did a head gasket at 300k, and that was expensive. i give mine hell, and its going strong, fuel ecconomy is my biggest killer, i run 35" mudders with a 3"lift, 2 1/2" exhaust with extractors and a high flow inlet and i average about 20L per 100km. But other than that only other problems i have come across is power steering pump and the steering knuckle bolts kept falling out will i went to magnum studs. no problem with diffs, gear box or cv's. good solid trucks.

Did high flow inlet do much to ya power increase??AngryElmo wrote:I have 330 odd on mine now, did a head gasket at 300k, and that was expensive. i give mine hell, and its going strong, fuel ecconomy is my biggest killer, i run 35" mudders with a 3"lift, 2 1/2" exhaust with extractors and a high flow inlet and i average about 20L per 100km. i think it did, bit more pickup but at the same time made my fule economy worse, i had a snorkle faceing forwards and ended up turning it around as it started to play up with the sensor. i now have a 3" bent snorkel with a hiflow k&n filter in the air box and have run a die grinder over all the sharp endges in the inlet manifold i could find, (only did it cos the head was off tho) but i dont that made a difference.

I have enough confidence in these motors that i flew to qold from nsw to buy a ute with 300,000 on it - the ute in my avatar. Our last 80 series had the same motor - we had it from approx 220,000 to 335,00, the only dramas we had was worn clutch (not slipping, but starting to to shudder when reversing our old boat up the driveway - replaced it), and then chain reaction plastic top tank radiator blew, then a few months later the head gasket went. Did about 50,000 after the head gasket before we sold it, no problems.
With that experience in mind - the radiator on my ute, top plastic tank has turned a tan brown colour, and has crazed all through, so i'll b replacing this very soon before it needs it, rather than after....
our 100 series also has the 4.5.... now has a huge 72,000 on it

The motor in my sahara had 360 on it when it was removed, it still ran great and had no issues (other than being thirsty) only reason it was pulled was to put the fte in
