My 60 has an anoying bug, periodically the front drive does not engage, but only happens in the low range box, works fine in high, pull it back to low say for a steep decent and the front free wheels while the rear compression lockup and skid.
Very annoying, I have checked the linkages, dont seem overly sloppy, I tried loosening the lever today and rotating it on the shaft on the case, thinking perhaps it wasnt rotating the shaft far enough but that didnt seem to work when tested this evening.
Is this a known phenomenon, is there a simple fix for this problem that everyone but me knows of
Thanks for your advice.

Is it the push button 4wd or lever? if the push button lever, the vacuum solenoids go on them and it won't shift.
THe lever type is a physical linkage to the cog that engages the front output. If the lever on the transfer is moving with the stick then it must be engaging.
Have you checked for a broken free wheeling hub or cv joint?
And for that matter have you put the truck on stands/a hoist to see if the front driveshaft is turning?

The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
