Wanted GQ SWB LSD Info

Post by bj on roids »

A friend has a 1987 GQ SWB. It has rear drums and an open centre......

He wants an LSD for it, but thinks the diff is held to the housing by only 9 bolts....

He said its an MQ style rear diff, just with coils.

Thought I would see if anyone else could share some light. Will a standard LSD centre piece bolt up to his crown wheel...??

the hemisphere is physically different, as is the housing. but the axles are the same in section, and the crown wheel is the same. so it should be possible, as long as the hemisphere physically fits into the carrier??

Honestly never seen one. I remember when they came out as my mate bought a swb st in 89 & we were all ga ga at the fact it had disc brakes all round & disappointed it had sealed beams instead of h4's.
I have worked on plenty but never seen a drum brake rear.
Thats the way it goes I guess.
:finger: right back at ya wendle

Vic rego form
Vic change of ownership form
ACT inspection cert
Vehicle ID clearance
Gas leak cert
Plate receipt
Plate storage docket
probably more that I can't remember...

Drums were pretty common in the early sh*tters, I got drums in my 89 model.

I thought there would be more arguments over the open centre than the drum brakes. Drums were common on those rigs before 1990, but the LSDs were just about factory.

We say that he has a "South African Mining Spec" just as a joke. IT is the yellow one that rolled onto its side during mud bulls and music 2 years ago.

Lsd out of a disc brake rear won't fit ,on the drum brake rear the axles touch in the centre which I think is to preload the wheel bearings the drum rears only have a single bearing on each axle

Mines definately got a rear LSD & drum brakes, maybe it was factory maybe not, from what I've heard the only difference is a block in the centre.

If it's anything like the US WD21 Pathfinder H233B which was available in disc and drum versions, they may be interchangeable. There is a thrust block in the center of the carrier of the disc-brake unit. Remove it and the disc LSD can go into a drum diff.

I'm interested to see the determination about the interchange of the center w/ the housing as I'm considering mating a GQ's front center to an MQ's rear housing.

In search of an MQ (offset) H233b rear, housing only preferred, plus a complete GQ or GU front (4.6 ratio ideal) to be shipped to the US. Cheap! Email/PM if you can help.

I think the spacer block required is 25mm.
It allows you to preload the wheel bearings.

what I wrote earlier is not entirely correct , an airlocker out of a disc rear end won't fit because of the cross shaft but the disc lsd is hollow so the axle length will not be a problem , my drum rear which I just removed is lsd, both rears that I have are 11 bolts and the gasket is the same front to back as well ,your diff might be entirely different

Hmm, you might have a problem there, you can mill outwards the holes on a MQ centre to fit a GQ crown wheel onto it to bolt it into a GQ front end, but you can't do the reverse easily.

Yellow, and brown vinyl, its hideous, if the car was featured on queer eye, those poor faggots would up and die. The colours are just plain nasty

Seems I've not quite learned what constitutes a "center" for you Australian guys, I thought it referred to the entire drop-out (third-member as we call it here) that contains the pinion, gears, center/carrier, and such. The whole thing that comes away from the axle housing.
That's my plan, to mate the third-member of a GQ front to the housing of an MQ rear...

yeah, people will either be talking about the complete drop-out or just the hemisphere. we are pretty slack with our language..

hook up with the other american dude who just joined up here to get your axles and shit, he seems to be sending stuff around the world prettyt regularly..
