AORC RND 2 - Finke Desert Race

Post by digsy »

Tattersall's Finke Desert Race
Australian Offroad Racing Championship
Round 2

11th June 2010

Alice Springs, NT

It's on again!
The biggest Desert Race in the Southern Hemisphere! And the 3rd largest in the WORLD!!!
It's going to be another crazy year where legends are born and men are broken!
There'll be heaps of action as always in the always crazy full line up of 500 bikes! It was full in under 2 weeks!!!
And the vehicles will impress with a huge range of exotic machinery and suspension setups being available for viewing at scrutineering on friday night!

There'll be the usual suspects in class 7 and 8 representing for the offroad fraternity!!! No doubt Sandy B will be putting on a show again! Hopefully no parachutes on the sides of NT roads but eh??!!

We'll be there!

Woo Woo

It's coming up FAST!

I'm riding a bike in it this year so it's going to be very grueling for a offroader like me!!!!! But worth it to say I raced Finke!

Next year maybe in something I can sit in......

So is anyone from on here heading out that way... Entered in class 7 or 8???

We will be heading out this year... Few boys from Offroad Cartel will be riding this year, as well as running pits and just generally having a good time and getting amougst it... Looking forward to getting out there and getting to check out some of the race equipment, especially BG's trophy truck in the flesh... Reckon he is a dead set dark horse for the outright this year...

Big Gallard is getting some fair tips on the Facebook tipping page there young Joshie!
The first bloke that tipped him must have been onto something!

I agree with you but mate! I reckon that the big Trophy Truck for Gallard is in contention for the outright.... especially after setting fastest time on return leg despite having to pass many many slower competitiors!
That sure will give the buggy boys something to talk about!

I also can't wait to see some of the quality class 7 and 8 rigs this year!

I wonder if Hunter is going to have his new Class1/8 out there! That thing should be super quick in the deeper sand! Will have plenty of mumbo and traction.......

Man I'm excited! And especially since the Offroad Promotion boys are doing the coverage for it on ONE HD! That is going to be awesome!

Can't wait

He's spent a lot of time in the prep for this years run and even more money. Should put on a good show.

(his tow rig is pretty cool as well :) )

Boom Boom

It's run and won!!!

Fellows got the outright again this year, Three in a row for the legend! But the big shaker was Gallard!!!! 2nd place! That's awesome for the big trophy truck!

A few little stats for you.

Gallard said that his truck tops out at about 220 on the straights, buggys can do 260+ but the buggys top out on the woops around 160 and Gallard is punching 180+! So all his moves are in the woops! This makes for some CRAZY AS HELL passing as Swaf, RD and Billy Geddes can attest too! Gallard is a loony!!!!! But a legend! Congrads to all the places but a huge hand to BG who has shown just how dangerous he can be with going outright King of the Desert! Next year bud!

To all the crazys in the lower classes, (1600, 4wd, etc) you guys also get a huge hand from me! That track is ruff as hell on a bike let alone in a short travel race rig! Your kidneys must be bleeding! So you guys get a huge hand from me, where the race itself is a huge achievement let alone a place!

This has been a huge eye opener for me! Every AORC event I go to I love! But this is survival of the fittest! Pure and simple this is the most amazing motorsport event I have ever seen! From the crowds lining the track in costumes clapping on everyone from 1st to 500th... cheering for you just because your racing the clock home, to the crazy presentation night and party atmosphere I can truely say that if you don't get out there you don't know what your missing! If your into Offroading this is one Trek that should be locked in! There's alot of great events out there... but there will only ever be one FINKE! There's a reason it's the biggest desert race in the southern hemisphere!

WOW!

Congrads kent , the old girl pulled through it just goes to show sometime you just gotta survive the race !A big pat on the back for any one who competed in this great event and its good to see that the people of the sport (gallard, rentsch, taylors ,chapman ,Prout etc) have the time to talk to their fans and how well they get on between each other. Well We have got the bug most def.....A Diesel In Class 8 is calling!!

we were only 3 mins behind the winning pajero on the way down and we ran out of fuel,(had to get some driven to us)

on the way back we... broke and removed front tailshaft, broke starter off, blew a oil line and fixed it, and drained a campers genset for fuel when we ran out, TO FINISH FIRST, FIRST YOU MUST FINISH, was a wicked race, im already stuck back into mine now lol

oh yea dont under estimate the "old girl" lol she can hold her own ha ha, we were at 6250rpm on the limiter in 5th with 33inch tyres and 4.11 gears in some sections, we got no speedo but it was quick lol, that was the cars first ever run with hydro bump stops and smoothie shocks,
so my kidneys were feeling it,

it was a blast but, you should have come and said gday

Had a look for ya at scrutineering, but as you know far out there was some people there! And then for the rest of it we were at the 150 km marker fuel stop for the offroad cartel Team we waved and kooied as you drove past . the old girl seemed to be handleing it not to bad, and it cool to find out the breakages you guys had and still made it . Good stuff

I'll cut and paste the right date. Also on the following Monday 7:30 pm and Weds 9:00am on One HD there is another good show about the Finke Desert race.

Thanks for the update!

So is Speedweek the Real Balls Promotions show (Rusty Bell and crew.)
And ONE HD the Offroad Promotions team?

Isn't it brilliant that AORC can get this sort of coverage on general media!
I reckon events like OBC, Cliffhanger and Engel would do well pushing for ONE HD coverage.... It's not too far off I reckon with the right promotion! And then the sky's the limit for Offroad Motorsport!!! Bring it on!

The Cartel Crew have already booked accommodation in Alice for next year as have the crew from Stuntzinc! It's gonna be another stella year in the dezert!!! Can't wait.... only 11 months till I can drool again at the machinery on show on Friday night!!!

Watched both of the coverages for the Finke , i must say even though offroad promotions couldn't cover the race (i would say due to the legality side of things) the format and professionalism was outstanding compared to what was on speedweek ! Good to actually see someone wanting to promote and take the sport into the future ..... Bring back Offroad Promotions!!!!!!

i found the show on one hd to be a load of shit, no offence to any of the guys racing, (but chapman so far ahead of his field all he had to do was make it home to win) 13mins ahead of us and we ran out of fuel,(and cairns coconut was ahead of us, then they showed him and colin hunter braking down and anyone would have thought no one else finnished...

Not 100% sure kent but ill think you will find they were not aloud to cover anything elese due to real balls promotion shows having the rights to the coverage this year ....Its a shame because Offroad promotions team do a much better job . ahhhwell maby they might get it back next year??

The Monster Energy Crew were down at the Finke End on Day 1
They were there supporting Brad Gallard with his Trophy Truck (2nd Outright) but they also cruised around handing out drinks to all the riders setting up there camps in the arvo!
They even posed for a photo with us lowly place getters........ I think Grabbo, Wonka and Billet had already helicopter'd to their King Beds for the night!!
