running a rear lokka

hey guys, i just recently put a lokka in the rear of my 75, as my dif decintegrated.

wheni got it i realised that it uses the pin that the side gears in the diff to drive it, and was wondering how much more stress it puts on the shaft than a standard diff center does.

have many of you guys ran a rear lokka, and how long for?? i replaced the shaft when i done it, but its just a thought at the back of my mind.

i can see a front running for along time in a part time 4wd, as being off road when 4wd is engaged would mean it can slip a little. which would eleveate some of the pressure of the front shaft, and its not getting it all the tim on road like the rear??

if its been setup properly (and alot aren't) they do not affect the car onroad unless you start spinning a wheel. So id imagine it would last similar time to a normal diff. Obviously depending on offroad use. There was a big article comparing all the different types of lockers in a 4x4 mag a little while back. If i remember the name ill let you know

if its road handling you are refering too what a load of rubbish...

if its the mag i'm thinking off it was one of the biggest jokes as far as tech articles go that i have seen in a long time.

It may put a bit more stress on the pin but due to how its set up it would need a sh!t load of pressure to shear of the pin.
I have had a rear lockka for a year and it was in the car before i bought it with no issues, So i wouldn't stress too much

Had one in the rear of my V8 FJ40 for about 5 years.
It made the odd "bang/ clunk" every now and again , mostly taking off at the lights gently, and it would understeer around corners with the power on, but is never gave me any trouble or reliability issues.
I just had to adjust my driving style to suit, i found power on the straights and power off during cornering and i never noticed it.
Also mine was a "Lockright " brand.

The biggest misconception with the "DIY" installation of a Lokka is its so easy to just whack it in there and drive.
You must get the backlash set correctly before you put the centre back in, its a quick job and most mechanics know how to do it properly.

As GUEEY said in his post you have to adjust your driving style, if you come around a roundabout with constant power down you will be locked and therefore spin the inside wheel, you have to back off to let it unlock and then power through.

Top bits of gear, i had one in rear of an old 60 and no complaints. Just the odd clunk or click which is normal operation.

I had two LockRights in my Zuki for 100,000 Ks. Only precaution was to swap over sungears to opposite sides. Gives the new couplers a fresh face to work with. Slightly accelerated tyre wear but ya wouldn't be without 'em. Ever.

just backlash?......thats the kind of stuff 4WD CRAPTION magazine would have you believe.


the most important thing in regards to this kind of locker is to have the side gear shims at the right thickness. these clearances must be measured when seting the centre up. failure to do so is pot luck. if you do not do this, and still set diff backlash correctly it will still piss, fart, moan and carry on regardless of you lash settings.


proper backlash is important on all diffs, but auto lockers need a bit more loving in certain areas.

ok guys, i got the info i wanted, but obviously a few did not read what i wrote.

i didnt ask about backlash, or noises on road.

it is actually vey quiet, i hear nothing, and it works properly, as on the odd occasion(like a roundabout with a side slope so the car is leaning to the left) i have heard it not unlock, but i know thats normal. i have not heard it doing some tight u turns or around round abouts.


i was purely and simply wanting to know how it goes with the pin in the diff,
