Challenger 3.2 DID ??? Worth the effort???

Post by FIS9076 »

Hey there guys, new to the forum and wanted to hit up the massive information base you guys seem to be,

Ive got an '01 Mitsu Challenger 3.0 V6 (auto) which i truely love and has been an extremely reliable daily driver and a damn fine 4wd which has suprised a fair few people with its ability, and where it has got to and returned.

Currently pretty much standard, but a long wish list is developing.

Ive been toying with the idea of when it comes time for a rebuilt (which is bound to happen eventually as im holding onto the car) of doing a diesel conversion, and contenplating the 4M41T DID engine out of a paj........?

Ive been looking into it a little and have seen that;
1.The o/s model's of challengers are available with the 2.8 Tdiesel
2.The petrol and diesel challengers run the same fuel tank but just a different pick up/filter
3.The challenger o/s model is available with the superselect 4wd
4.The 2.8 and the 3.2 engines run the same block but different intercoolers, fuel pumps and heads
5.I think the front and rear drive shafts are the same for the Superselect and the P/T 4wd, but a different final drive ratio (not sure what the diesel is)
6. and Why the hell not :)

All this leads me to think that the 3.2 4M41 turbo diesel should slip pretty much straight into the challenger, even with the SuperSelect 4WD Tcase. I wont do it if it needs a body lift as having the SRS and being a daily driver.

Yeah i know it will be LOTS more than just a quick change, including;
Engine ECU and Immobiliser ECU
Perhaps upgrade the ABS for the traction control etc with the new ECU
Full wiring looms for engine and peripheries,
Front and rear diff's to suit diesel (got LSD rear atm, diff lock on the cards)
Fuel Tank filler (prob go a long range tank at same time)
Custom exhaust

The biggest problem i can see atm is the instrument cluster going from a petrol to a diesel for the tacho etc, but i guess i can import whats needed to suit the diesel and fit the challenger dash out of an o/s diesel model.

Let me know what you all think about the idea and any pro's/con's you can come up with. Is there a better engine out there suitable for the challenger for a daily driver/ decent offroader / tourer??

Ive looked over the stuff on the NH (?) shorty running the DiD and the South African guy with the Early model Paj and havent been turned off the idea.

The Mods currently done are ;
Decent main battery (Supercharge 760CCA)
Aux Battery Tray (Piranha) and Dual Battery set-up (Redarc)
Safari Snorkle (SS650HF)
Front & Rear Diff Breathers to Engine Bay
GME UHF (TX3200)

The To-Do list;
OME Suspension in a few weeks
Ball-joint Flip with new suspension
SportsRange Winch Bullbar with tax return
ARB on-board Air Compressor
ARB front diff locker
4x4Systems Long Range Fuel Tank

Thanks guys,

Be careful which 3.2 you use, triton one has issues with carbon blocking the intake due to the egr.

Yeah I'd definitely use a Paj DiD not the common rail Triton 3.2.
Someone has put a 3.2DiD into a NL shortie and from memory it was a bit of work but fitted in ok but I think he had to get a new output shaft made up for the NL t/case to fit the DiD 5sp auto.
Do a google and I'm sure it will come it was on quite a few Mitsi forums.
I would also definitely go the 5sp auto they are an excellent combination.
I just luv my "clacker Jabber"

Not so much a lemon - they have released a new manifold - most have been replaced.
A good cleanout, new manifold and block the egr - they are great.

Just something to be aware of.

Mine has been great and goes friggen hard, chipped and boosted.

Have a look at Chip It for good info on 3.2 mods - no affiliation
