HELP needed ! ! !

Post by shooter »

g'day just had a look at an 85 yn65 hilux . . . clean and is good throughout BUT when we locked the front hubs and put it in 4wd(high n low) it made a heavy clicking/clunking sound from the front section( hard to pinpoint if diff prop shaft transfer case or hubs) when put in H4 and still had the hubs locked the noise continued, when the hubs were free'd it stopped, drove it back to sellers place, re-engaged hubs ( no noise) but when engaged 4wd it started making the noise again. the noise graduates with the speed you are doing. the hubs seem like they have been rebuilt( slide easily ) and one side feel's as if it doesn't fully engage. advice/possible problems/costs and experiences with this problem would be greatly appreciated. if i were to buy this car it would be a daily for work so would have to be reliable and same for 4wding.

cheers - shooter

If its a clicking sound that gets faster as you speed up, then have a look at the front shaft, mine did this after I got it, the double uni joint at the rear end of the front shaft was stuffed, I greased the crap out of it, it still did it, so I replaced it, all good since then.
As for the hub not locking in properly, pull the offending hub off(only a few bolts), and fit the spring properly and all should be good.
Good luck.

If you're buying this car, use this as a means of getting the price down considerably. If it's something as simple as a broken CV it'll take you a couple of hours and little $$ and it'll be fixed.

thanks for the info, put an offer in and he declined ( about 2k off asking price as motor was supposed to be reconditioned but was giving me compression readings around the 100/120psi mark and differentiated on cylinders) so i went n saw another hilux ... n bought that instead :D very clean n no problems( struggled to find anything significant to pick on to haggle with) and had good compression.

i'll post full photo's n details in the members section once i have it home but will give a few details as i still need a roadworthy n a phone number of someone who could do it pmed to me.

So its a 1988 hilux
5" lift ( 2" inch body, 3" suspension with reset leaf's, rancho s9000 5 pot adjustable shocks n greasable shackles)
34"/35" new muddies
has been resprayed a metallic blue( very clean no dints but a few small bubbles )
4Y motor thats been reconditioned(160PSI on each cylinder)
extractors exhaust n a bit of headwork.
few other bits n pieces but i'll save that for later, gotta get a roadworthy first so if anyone knows of anyone who does mobile roadworthies for this kind of car would be greatly appreciated

thanks shooter.

I assume it has been mod plated for the sus luft and paperwork from DOT for the BL + will at least need to borrow some 31's for a roady ;)

Better off checking before you go, as I understand that over 2" sus lift needs plating/approval.
Might be good if you are wrong and really only has 2" sus lift ;)

So its been a while, got the 88 hiluxand spent about 2 weeks tidying her up before roadworthy.

The things that have been done:

-Re trimmed brown and cream interior to black- absolute mission but worth it ;)
-Rewired about half the car ( spotties/UHF/stereo and all relays etc were in a world of pain before i got to them)
-Fixed up all the little bits and pieces for roadworthy - one headlight out, dodgy steering wheel with no horn button, indicator bulbs
-Service
-Removed air filter and put a pod filter on, to make space for the second battery

Now the things that i want to do or that have to be replaced/fixed or mod plated

-34inch tyres and same with 5 inch lift - got defected but didn't sign the defect notice and haven't received anything in the mail :? any ideas what happens next?
-Bullbar and scrub bars ( mate hit my front right quarter panel)
-Spotties ( around the $200 mark, liked the narva taurus my mate had but too big )
-Second fuel tank
-Tune carbi
-Replace window tint
-Extend sidesteps
-canvas cover for tray

SO the question is can someone point me in the right direction for the things above? I'm not looking to spend a world of money and have the time/people power to do things like welding scrub bars onto the bull bar, so more looking at where to get the steel to do so and a second hand bullbar, tank from wreckers etc.
