2h fuel problems!?

Post by paul.b »

I have an 88 hj75 ute with the 2h motor, its got 260 000 on the clock and has always ran well. I went away for 2weeks and on my return the battery was flat so i clutch started it and it drove fine all day. next morning it had full battery power but didn't start, i checked the glow plugs and all were stuffed (were also 6v when should of been 12v plugs) so i replaced them along with a new air filter. I needed to bleed the line's to start it after stuffing with the lines trying to find out why it wouldn't start but the primer pump was pissing fuel everywhere so i replaced that too. After bleeding it the car started first go, ran on idle for about a minute then died and i needed to bleed it again. I repeated this process a few times with the same result, it would run like normal for a minute then die due to getting no fuel. I pulled the intake hose off that goes from the water separator (i think thats what it is) to the fuel feed pump and put it into a clear bottle off fuel and started the car to see what was happening. again the car started and ran fine for the minute or so and died. now the intake hose from the pump i had in the bottle was blowing air not sucking fuel so thats the problem but why is that happening!? i'm thinking its cos the fuel filter is stuffed and its just pumping pressure back cos it has nowhere to go but thats an uneducated guess and i really have no idea.
anyone had this problem before or no what it is?
thanks guys.

Hello, I had the same problem, it was a crook hose between the injector return pipe to the lift pump banjo, it is a small rubber hose, about 4 inches long, they wont leak fuel but will introduce air into the system, hope this helps you.

Are you sure about the glowplug voltage, If it has 2 resistors in the inlet manifold then it is 6 volt, if there is 1 resistor then it is a 12 volt system

Yes, the 88 HJ75 should have 2 resistors in the manifold and 6 volt glow plugs.
