Help .... Wheel Bearings, 1989 GQ 4.2
Help .... Wheel Bearings, 1989 GQ 4.2
hi all,
yesterday my front bearings decided that they want to be replaced. Problem is I'm sick of getting ripped off at mechanics overcharging. I am prepared to do them myself, but need guidance. This may be wierd request....but would someone be prepared to show me how to do them. I'm a quick learner but just need to be shown correct way. Happy to pay for your time....with money or beer!! I can source parts needed but have no idea what to do. I have purchased the patrol manual but it just confused me more. I live at Razorback, near picton (NSW) ....so need someone to come to me, as i cant drive it at the moment.
Any help would be appriecated...thanks in advance.

Re: Help Needed....Wheel Bearings
What tells you they need replacing? Is it possible they just need greasing and re-tightening?
Bearings do get loose over time and sometimes an adjustment is all that's needed.

sorry for not having all information.
after reading last post ive noticed i didnt inculde all the info.
Its a 1989 GQ 4.2 Petrol Patrol. It's the front bearings that need to be replaced.
Actually i dont know if it is bearings....I was told it probably is it.
Driving home last week, there was a grinding noise coming from front wheels and right front wheel kind of "popped off". It is still attached but has king of colapsed inward.
I took a photo to show problem.
i need help as i dont know what to do.

Re: Help Needed....Wheel Bearings
hi,
its got a 3 inch body lift.
8 inch tough dog shocks with 8 inch springs
currently running on Maxxis 35's all round. Was going to go bigger wheels but its hard to get in as it is.
Big boys dont jump that high!!
yeh....i thought bearings had gone. Lucky i made it home. I was actually worse but picture is already on high-lift jack.
Really dont know how to fix it. I'm actually worried ill make it worse if i attempt to fix, or maybe i dont fix proper and
wheel falls off or something while driving.
I'll see if anyone can help me here.....
thanks

Re: Help Needed....Wheel Bearings
It could also be the king pin bearings, just another thought. It is most likely the wheel bearings though.
When the wheel is off the ground and you shake the tyre, is the movement just in the wheel, or does the whole swivel hub move?

.....I think its just in the wheel. but i guess if i need to replace bearings anyway, shouldnt i replace king pins as well??When the wheel is off the ground and you shake the tyre, is the movement just in the wheel, or does the whole swivel hub move?Top Report this postReply with quote
I know it may be a stupid question....but why does this happen?? Is it cause of the age of the patrol?
What can be done to avoid this??

Re: Help Needed....Wheel Bearings
probably is the wheel bearing although if they are in that state I would run a swivel hub rebuild kit through it
you will need to purchase a swivel hub kit, they can be purchased from ebay, don kyatts or any parts store like repco or bursons, expect to pay around $200 plus wheel bearing as the hub kit does not include wheel bearings. you will also need a hub spanner, not sure of the size, someone here will be able to tell you that
take your time pulling everthing down and lay it out as you do, you will need to start by removing the wheel and thenbrake caliper then pull the free wheeling hub off and everything will sort of reveal itself as you pull it down, The king pin bearing are from the top and bottom of the swivel hub and will come with the swivel hub kit, when you pull them out you can take the hub off the knuckle and replace the wiper seal while your at it.
once you have done the bad side, do the good side
if you get stuck take pics and post up here

Re: Help Needed....Wheel Bearings
They're 54mm. about $25 on ebay, not sure what you'd pay in the stores.Tiny wrote: you will also need a hub spanner, not sure of the size, someone here will be able to tell you that
Not done one myself, but have read posts recommending that you need to replace the lock washers on the hubs as you can damage them getting them off. They are not part of the swivel kit.
The problem if you do damage the lock washer is that the passenger wheel hub can work itself loose, and the driver side tightens up (or the other way around....).
Why not make a repair thread about it like what mike_nofx did with his diff (http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/viewtopic ... 5&t=212410" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) - take pictures of each step and show us how you did it. As stated, if you get stuck, they'll be people here who can help.
Re: Help .... Wheel Bearings, 1989 GQ 4.2
I'll second the replacement of the lock washer. No point rebuilding the front end if the nuts are going to come loose straight away. Your Nissan dealer should have them in stock.
Another tip: There are some sleeves (2) inside the freewheeling hub assembly that need to be removed before your wheel bearing lock nut socket will fit in there. Use some sirclip pliers or similar to get them out.

what do i need to do for the upgrade?? If its better than i wouldnt mind doing it.
Re: Help .... Wheel Bearings, 1989 GQ 4.2
Basically,
In MQ / GQ / GU all have the same thread stub axle.
MQ and GQ use 2 nuts with a flat washer inbetween folded over and sitting in a groove to lock them off....
In GU they improved it.
Its a round thick ring with holes in it, which you tighten, then a round plate slides over the front and 2 screws go through it.
It cant flog out, and it cant come undone.
Its a cheap mod, bits only cost maybe $60 for both sides from Nissan. You need 2 x lock ring, 2 x lock plate and 4 x screws.

Re: Help .... Wheel Bearings, 1989 GQ 4.2
Correct, The Safari's come with them as standard. On mine I found the screws to burr or wear over time so I now use 4mm hex cap screws.

Re: Help .... Wheel Bearings, 1989 GQ 4.2
This is a bit off topic, but in the last 12 months there's been quite a few threads on here about GU owners having wheel bearings coming loose. If the GU setup "can't" come loose, then what going on here?
Re: Help .... Wheel Bearings, 1989 GQ 4.2
The bearings must be collapsing? Mine came loose after i did the GU wheel bearing locking setup and found it was the wheel bearing had collapsed.coxy321 wrote:This is a bit off topic, but in the last 12 months there's been quite a few threads on here about GU owners having wheel bearings coming loose. Re: Help .... Wheel Bearings, 1989 GQ 4.2
The reason why MQ and GQ bearings come loose is because the little tab that sits on the lock washer in the stub axle isnt thick enough and it wears its way into the thread of the stub axle and winds loose....
The GU setup completely elliminates this issue.
I think you will find ppl commenting on there GU wheel bearings coming loose will be ppl that have 250,000kms on there GU and have never touched the bearings or looked at them in its life....

Where abouts in Syd are ya? i can do wheel bearings in a patrol 20 mins a side
AA's for Quitters
Re: Help .... Wheel Bearings, 1989 GQ 4.2
I'd have to do some searching to check, but i'm sure a lot of them were after front end rebuilds or bearing replacements. Its probably not something that needs to be discussed here indepth - i just thought i'd mention it. In the mean time, i'll go and do some research on the aforementioned issue.Screwy wrote:I think you will find ppl commenting on there GU wheel bearings coming loose will be ppl that have 250,000kms on there GU and have never touched the bearings or looked at them in its life....
