Post pics of your Custom Rear wheel carrier.

Post by Latitude777 »

Just finished doing some work on my 4runner to carry a spare wheel on the back. (turns out 33" tyres dont fit in the spare wheel well underneath ;) )

So here is my effort.. Though it hasnt undergone trials yet and i imagine it will need trimming up some as it looks as though it may reduce my rear departure angles... See 1st side on pic.. The bottom corner looks like it may get me hung up some... Which could be bad as it could do damage to my rear door...

Is mounted as an extension off my Hayman Reece tow bar, atleast will allow me to remove the whole thing if i decide to remove the tow pack (which will happen eventually when i get another car with a towball).. Then i can start thinking about a full rear custom bar...

Post up the pics of yours....

just looking at the rear bar on that 4runner, how easy is it to get that spare off?? looks like it would be tricky.

Equally tricky for someone looking for a free tyre!

Heres my effort (at least at 80% built stage), its a little overkill and does weigh a little, but the actual rear bar is hollow and acts as my airtank. Can hold down my airhorns for a few minutes with that resovoir behind em.

Yeah the nuts and locks are all located on the inside so its harder to steel but easy enough to remove once it's swung open. Works ok but too heavy a setup from what I've found. I've broken 2 latches one time which resulted in the tyre swinging right round and giving the drivers rear quarter a good nudge... All popped out ok but I'll be going back to the drawing board with a new design..

Built my bar over Christmas. Just have to make the jerry can holder & get some checker plate to finish it. Total cost so far $300.

Looks rugged but aren't you loosing out on rear departure angles?! That looks as though if hangs lower than a standard rear bumper?!

It is the same as the rear bar. I used 8mm angle as the main bar(acquired from work), took the plastic ends off & fitted the angle over the rear cross member. The tow bar is mounted up to it's original position so the departure angle is the same but with the spare out of the way.
