99 model heads rebuilt.
Gday all.
The ex misses has a 99 model paj exceed and its up to me (to pay) for anything that ever needs to be fixed on it.
ATM its intermitently blowing smoke and im pretty shore its the valve stem seals. Does anyone have any idea as to cost to get these recoed?
Ill be removing and replacing them myself. Ive heard prices from 800 to allmost 3000. Any info would be great.
Oh its the 3.5 DOHC motor.
Cheers Jamie.

Re: 99 model heads rebuilt.
When does it blow smoke? Just driving around normally? When it's workin hard? Normally stuffed valve stem seals only make it smoke on startup. If it's smoking while you're driving, it could be a few things, rings being one of them. Maybe do a compression test and see what the compression is like in all cylinders.
Re: 99 model heads rebuilt.
yeah that will come very soon. ATM just trying to work out what its all going to cost me. Sometimes when sitting idling for a bit it will smoke when you drive off.
Re: 99 model heads rebuilt.
I've only ever worked on holden straight 6's and v8's....and well with them it's about 5 bux for a pack of valve stem seals and the cost of a vrs kit if ya decide to take the head/s off to do them. Not sure about other motors tho.
Anything that gets passed the seals while driving normally isn't that noticable, which is why ya normally only see the smoke on start up, as it's had a bit of time to get a slight buildup.

I shreaded a motor recently due to an oil pickup issue.
A late model low K motor was sourced for a very reasonable sum .. refitting a motor would not be a huge amount more work than pulling and refitting heads.

Re: 99 model heads rebuilt.
What sort of coin did you fork out for a low k motor?
Re: 99 model heads rebuilt.
The actual valve stems seals are cheap - if everything else is in order - why take the heads off? Try and do them in situ. I understand it is a bit harder to do with the 24valve DOHC than the 12 Valve SOHC but still doable.
Valve stems on the 3.5's are a comoon thing - sitting idling at traffic lights and take off in a puff of smoke, puff of smoke after a downhill etc

Re: 99 model heads rebuilt.
yep that pretty much what its doing. Never knew it was possable to do them in situ.
Seems to be a mitsubishi thing with VSS at about the 220000 mark

Re: 99 model heads rebuilt.
For what it is worth, the reason you get smoke after extended idling or a downhill run on the overrun, the engine develops maximum vacuum when the throttle is closed. If you have worn stem seals, it sucks air (and oil) in through them and then into the engine to be burnt. Worn rings do the same thing, only you tend to notice it more then because of the lack of power. Mitsubishis especially the old Sigmas were famous for this. Apart from oiling up spark plugs and polluting the atmosphere, it won't do any damage unless you run out of oil.

Hence a womens car and the ability for her to stay ontop of the oil is lets just say an Issue.
Re: 99 model heads rebuilt.
I needed a motor right away, got one from a TL magna been written off (rear ended) just uner 80,000ks for $750 delivered .. so it was 200,000ks newer than the motor it replaced.nottie wrote:What sort of coin did you fork out for a low k motor?
