What year GQ do you have ? the late model gq boxes are heaps bigger and stronger than early ones.

91 mod but i do have a 2nd 1 that needs a rebuild. looking at the 2 side by side can u tell if 1 is a latter model. so i figure it might be easyer just go 4 a gu if it fits

You will need a custom steering arm

He GU uses a differnt pitch on the balljoint so you can't use the GQ steer arm or a GU one, you need one with a GU end at one end and a GQ one at the other for the diff end

Apart from that its a bolt off, bolt on job, pretty easy. DId it to mine about 3 years ago, never looked back

I've got an '89 GQ and when my steering box crapped itself I replaced it with one from a '97 model its physically bigger and has the same pitman arm as earlier GQs, also the guy that rebuilt it (steering specialist) said he had to use two kits (GQ and GU) to do it. Old oneImage[/img] New oneImage

The late model gq box is physically the same as a gu box but uses a "gq" pitman arm. This box is a direct bolt in on any gq. The gu box needs an aftermarket arm as the taper for the tie rod is the opposite direction to a gq. You can also use a late gq leafy steering box but it has a different pitman arm, with your small gq pitman arm fitted it will be a direct bolt in to any gq.
You cant use a gu steering arm on a gq unless a gu front diff is fitted as the arm is longer.

My 89s got a leaky OEM unit and I bought 1 off a 94,also an OEM. Upon making sure it would all be good i noticed the diameter off the shaft into pitman arm of 94 is larger diam ' than 89 and the distance between centres of arm and pitman bolt are different..
Will this pose a problem wen fitting up as I dont really see it being 1?

I've had no dramas with a 97 model box in my 89 model the only other thing I changed shortly after fitting the box was a superior heavy duty adjustable draglink as my OEM one was stuffed.

the 97 GQ one isn't the GU one, it has smaller internals than the GU still. they are bigger than the original one, but still not as strong as the GU

Yeah I know the 97 is not the GU but I got it at the right price and well ..........hell ...... it's still an upgrade compared to what I had so for me it was an easy descision.

Yeah mine was only $55 & in good nick so I grabbed it,knew it was a GQ unit with minimal difference. After reading all posts i'll upgrade to a GU unit & draglink at later date. Thanx for the info guys, much appreciated.
