Hey guys, my GU has 368,000 on him now, and I'm starting to feel like she needs some surgery. I have got my hands on two TD42 motors, minus the head so I can pick the best bits and pieces to make one. I am looking to put a complete rebuild kit through it, sleeves, pistons etc etc. So does anyone have any suggestions, ideas, comments?

I will think about weather I put my GT2860rs on it, or upgrade to a GT2871r. I have just had injectors and IP done not too long ago, clutch is most recent upgrade, so I think it will be a pretty straight forward change over? What do you guys think and who here has done it?

I have also got to find a good head, and get hime done too. I will post pictures, but it won't be until the spring guys.

hey mate, not to be rude but search there is so freakin many threads on rebuildin the td42. search function is even better now with the forum upgrade. im headin down the same path have spent hours readin through alot of great tech and plenty of pics too, gotta love this site. so hit the search button!

The only thing that I would suggest that most engine builders seem to neglect is the state of the parent bore. That is the bore the liners slide into, if it is not perfectly round over time the liners will deform to match the parent bore and you will end up with oil consumption issues.

Hi Joel
I havent rebuilt a TD42 before, but dont they normally run a hone down the bores after they have been pressed in to ensure they are round? Not that I am saying dont check the parent bore, but I thought this was normal practice on pressed liners.

clanky i would say they do, but what joel is saying, is that if they press the liner into the parent bore, hone it to get it round, if the parent bore was out of round to start with, the liner will match this shape over time.

thats my understanding anyway?

Now I have no machining experience but could the old liner be cut out (bored out) with the boring machine before the new sleeve is pressed in ?
