what are the lift laws in qld??

my patrol has a 4 inch lift and has 35 inch tyres and is fully engineered, but i live in nsw...I want to tour qld and was wondering if i will cop it from them up there? will i be subject to a bunch of trouble or will i be ok?

From my understanding (and what i have been told) if you have proof that it is engineered in the state its registered in you will be good. its a different story if your going to register it there :)

Yeah you'll be right mate. If your just visiting they wont get ya. When I lived in sydney and had a pretty big hilux on 35s and travelled up here (Yeppoon)
a number of times without to much trouble. Got pulled over but no dramas. Like old mate said its a different story if you were trying to register it in QLD. R.I.P hilux. trust me i know!

you wont get picked on bud if your runnin NSW plates they might look at you wishin you were runnin QLD plates lol but you shouldnt have any hassles

the amount of trucks gettn round with 35's n 37's on teh road now is getting bit full on, ide say they havntbene doing much at all up here. glad there still happier to nab them rice burning sh*t boxes getn around that think there cars fast n they can drive.

My brother IL just bought an immacculate 100 ser (with all the accessories you can think of) from Vic and got it trucked up. It's got 5 inch coil and 34ish size rubber. Very nice car. Anyway, he took it to Rocky for the roadie (gas inspection), passed without a hitch (except had to put the third row seats back in). He then drove it to QT to get the rego for it. Of course they saw it drive out so he got a letter in the mail to bring it in for inspection.

I too was wondering the same thing as I & a couple of mates are off to QLD next week. We to are from NSW, BUT my truck aint engineered gets done in august. So I take it they wont bother us cause we're running NSW plates.

As bad as it sounds you can only hope the authorities turn a blind eye (unlikely) or simply assume its all legal.
Funny thing is it seems to work the other way round as well (QLD plates in NSW) as a guy I know from QLD but living and working in NSW has full GQ running gear (RB30, 5 speed, diffs etc) also runs 37's and a four link rear in a G60 and has never been hassled.

yea i hear ya. were up there for 10 days at one of the 4wd parks. But i need to get to hillcrest to get the tune sorted for the day. so hopfully i can sneak around there & back on my up to the park without any hassles.

(Disclaimer) I am NOT advocating driving an unapproved vehicle in QLD ............... but......... try and make sure it at least looks like it might go throught a QLD roadworthy check barwork, mudflaps etc and fingers crossed you might be OK....

All crap aside, your vehicle must comply to the state that it is driven in, just because you are on holiday does not give you the right to have an illegal car on the road in the eyes of the government. ( does not matter that it is NSW approved)

Just hope you dont get the attention of DOT otherwise it will be over the pits.
My opinion is keep it clean and tidy and dont bring attention to yourselve, and dont go to the 4wd parks on big events as DOT has a habit of making themselves present at some parks on those weekends.

i would take it back to the guys who did the roadworthy first as they can get i huge trouble for doing him a favor and passing it threw a roadworthy.

I just said to him to either get some 2 inch coils and borrow some tyres off a mate or just play dumb, ring them up and say "It's just been roadworthied with new registration in QLD" (if they'd bothered to look at that before they sent the letter). Apart from the lift, the only thing they may question is a slight weep from the rear main. And to really sink the boot in, the pricks will charge you for the inspection if it doesn't pass.

as was said, i think they can do you for driving a vehicle that doesnt comply, but they would be hard pushed.

i daily drive a 4" lifted trol, half the time with 35s on, which sit wider than the tray, never had an issue. get a bit nervous everytime i see a cop though

so does everyone in QLD who has a lift over 40mm not have any kind of insurance ??

is everyone running the risk of being done for an unresistered/un insured car ??

what happens if you hit a fezza and brake the guys legs. if your insurance is void how are you going to pay for his 400k car and all his medical bills ??

is everyone seriously running that risk ?? what would happen if someone else running the same risk hit your family ???


just putting it out there. i have a 4 inch lift sitting in the shed but i'm not willing to put it on because of the risks.

If that was the case, insurers could wipe your insurance for an oil leak or a spot of rust. I think they have to prove that the modification played a part in causing the accident.

and also, most insurance mobs will cover you for a 4" lift.

ring aami, just state, it has a 4" lift, is that ok, the answer is yes everytime, then when they read back the list of modifications, your all good, and it should be detailed on the policy when they send it to you.

plenty of people running 3rds arms, or superiors, no sway bars etc etc, none of thats covered either.

unless the accident was a direct result of the modification, then they cant do squat

While it is nice to have all those things listed on your incurance policy, every insurance policy I have ever seen also states that the vehicle must be in a legal roadworthy condition. That trumps any "extras" listed on the policy.

Even if you have a 4" lift listed on the policy, when your car lands on its side swerving to miss a rabbit on the road, and writes off your car and the brand new $500k Mercedes that was in the lane next to you the first thing the insurance company will look at is was the car roadworthy and if not could they reasonably convince someone that the lift even in a minor way contributed to the accident. If yes, and lets face it 4" lift increases the centre of gravity and decreases the stability, then you have no insurance.

Indeed the insurance company could argu that your car was not legally allowed to even be on the road, and if the car was not on the road the accident would not have occured.

Big risk for an extra inch or two of clearance you will probably never need in a vehicle that is road registered.

I just had to inform my insurance company for fitting personal plates
If you are involved in a crash and your vechicle is prooved to be the cause due to unaprooved mods,a state of unroadworthyness
(oil leaks,broken mounts,rust,broke lights whatever)
I hope you know a good solicitor or enjoy your stay in the iron hotel
There are major investigations now with crashes of substance,(personal injury,death ect) you know shutting roads ect

Regarding the road worthy debate above
All the inspector has to say (should be on the roadworthy as well)
Is that the car was of a roadworthy state when he seen it
Your word against his
The roadworthy inspector is NOT responsible after it leaves him,its your responsibility
The roadworthy are only valid for a short time, after that expires your on your own
Some inspectors have been known to turn a blind eye,but you must have known it was not rite before hand

Or are you like others knowing its not rite and scream when you get caught

You don't get out much do you? I use every bit of my lift and tyres and some when I go bush.

IMHO a vehicle that is deemed "technically unroadworthy" (I use that term lightly), does not mean it is "technically unsafe". If you go higher (than accepted) lift (say 4-5 inch lift) and increase track width (which is allowed up to 50mm on a live axle vehicle anyway) and add wider wheels & tyres, then your vehicle should perform the same or better than a standard version of the vehicle, especially with the technology built into tyres and shock absorbers these days. As said I think (and I'm pretty sure) they have to prove that the modification or "unroadworthy condition" contributed to the accident. Otherwise every GQ wagon owner would be farked after they park on a hill as the water in the washer bottle siphons out the back washer.

I think that the common sense thing QLD should do when adopting laws from NSW and VIC (the draft has been drawn up I'm told) is for any modification to a vehicle's suspension to be approved, it has to pass a "brake and swerve test", that would weed out alot of the sh!boxes. Also I suggest allowing police access to a vehicles modification summary through DOT/RTA/VIC roads (on their incar computer), so they can instantly see if the vehicle's big tyres or lift kit are approved or plated. There would of course be more to it than that, but it would encourage people to have the modifications done properly and within "good engineering practice". How else do you shoehorn a V8 into a Gemini?

That's just my opinion, I'm sure somone else can put a different spin on the subject.

i'm with you BADMAV on those suggestions.

but since your only allowed 2 inches of lift in QLD if you have 3 inches of lift and have a crash then "TECHNICALLY" your car is unresistered. because it is outside of the laws of registeered vehicles.

I only have 2 inches of lift (and NRMA insurance- AAMI wint touch me. to many mods) and am constantly draging myself over tracks. thank good for good quality body protection. sliders, tube front and rear bars have saved pleanty of paint. however i still get caught on the gearbox mounts.

I'm working with a few engineers on designes for a legal lift to be done in QLD (3+ inches). i'll let you know as more details are available.

I thought the lift rule in QLD was one third of the original bumpstop mesurement?? I could be wrong but wouldn't anything over this be considered illegal by an insurance company ?? We all know how far these parasites will go to protect their own interests.........

This is correct, sort of, it is actually reduction of the bumpstop rebound distance. Which is distance from standing height to full droop. You cannot reduce that by more than a third. But they say that 2 inch is acceptable.

We have different states with different rulings
How fugged is that ???
The way the crack downs are happening,
I would be modding anything within the "correct"guidelines
At the end of the day it could come to 5mm if they want to get picky, especially if the insurance company has to cough up 10s of thousands of $$$

Not worth risky everything you own over an illegal mod
