Need a new 4by. The old 1989 Troopy is a bit long in the tooth and I am having difficulty in choosing another.
Cannot afford a new one but have 30 to 35k to spend.
I want a full sized 4wd and really have no reason not to get another troopy but I should look at all options. Must be Diesel. Offread work will account for a majority of its use as I currently have a Company car for general running around. Needs to be a good tow vehicle, boat and camper trailer to be dragged around. I am not a comfort king although a little more comforts than my current troopy would be a bonus.
What do you think would be the best value for the money I have ?
Nissan ? prefer 4.2 turbo
80 series ?
100 series?
75/78 series troopy?

why not try the nissan patrol 4.2L turbo diesel it would be right at home off road and seem to be in the top 3 all the time

disco's and rangies would have to be the biggest heap of shite to tow with that has ever had fuel wasted on it. Go the patrol best value for money. The 80 series or 100 series also tow well if you can put up with toyota's inherent problems and over pricing. I'm not talking out my as$e I know about tow vehicles as i sell caravans and 4x4 gear and test tow with every vehicle available.

What problems are you refering to ?
GXL Turbo Diesel 80 series- 6" King springs + Rancho in-cab kit- 35" BFG Muds Twin ARB airlockers.
Patrol - as for that type of coin you could probably get yourself an early GU 4.2 Turbo. if not an early 4.2 diesel and put a turbo on it. Also they are hard to break.
Where as mid90's turbo cruisers are still getting low to mid 30's and they usuallly have alot of k's on them.
Also if you are just after a low mileage one, try the auctions.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
Buy the Patrol, put an aftermarket turbo on the thing, take it for a bash off road and you'll soon come to wonder why you even drove a toyota in the first place.
Patrols have it all over the toyota landcrab's in every aspect.

Did you not read the bit saying offroad will account for most of its work and it needs to pull more than a empty box trailer this is why PATROL is the first option and is leading the poll.

The patrols (GQ) had a tougher driveline than the 80 series but the 80 had better bodywork .. now the patrol's bodywork isn't exactly crap it will devlop a few more squeaks and rattles, that kind of thing.
The GU was about par with the 80 for the bodywork with essentially the same driveline as a GQ (a few gearbox mods and perhaps a different rear diff) but suspension etc is the same ...
Having spent same quality time behind the wheel a GQ, GU and an 80 .. I prefered the nissans onroad handling it is more "chuckable" in corners ect and was mroe predictable on the edge .. (you could generally do a 3,2,1 countdown as to when the rear end would step out) and I think that they carry a load better in stock form .. but once you get some decent suspenders under em that all evens out anyways ..
I guess the nissan is also easier to "bush mechanic" doe to an entirely less complex 4x4 and fuel system ..
Other than what is mostly opinion any of the trucks outlined will be great .. depending on the price they are going for .. but I would prefer coils to leaves anytime ...

With the gear that we travel with I think the pajero may be a little small.
Our 75 series troopy is ordinarily packed to the bottom of the windows for the full length of the rear section. Fishing ros and other bits are fixed to the roof on the inside.
I ahd a look at aPatrol yesterday and may need to re think the fishing rod thing if I go that way.
