Say it ain't so!
First Bruce (who?) comes out with a Barina, then RN powdercoated his wheels,Vulcanised trades his forby on a two wheeled couch, Ruff goes hilux mad, Chimp becomes a wet nurse, J-top sports a cardigan sweater and goes yachting, Tonka buys a Heep, Nam hasn't posted since 1984, AJF putts round on a scooter (a scooter!), Boner gives up right in the middle of doing an overpriced escort, Locklux and MKpatrol have traded their forbies and dignity for a couple of treadlies, GayWagenSven still hasn't posted any build photos evar, and now you buy a Kia!
V8Patrol has probably traded his Charger and guns on a crochet set and a "how to make a stellar mint julep" book. FFS! And don't get me started on Guts and BJonRoids! Are they even still together?
*sigh* I remember when this place used to be populated by men.

Welcome to the club Barnsey
You are right, they are underrated and it is a shame more aftermarket support is not available. The limited slip is wicked in them.
I am speaking with Ultimate at the moment about suspension, They used to do a lift 40mm for the front and 50-60mm in the rear.
EDS in Brendale have plans for skid plates for the sporties.
Try the OZKIA website for some good info as well. You can see the skid plates on the OZKIA website.
ODA1 from outdoor auto can supply a snorkel for them. The picture in his website is my Sportage. You can get a dual battery tray from Pirahana but the battery is very small and slots on the drivers side. You can get a cargo barrier for them. Body lift are available from America. 1 3/8ths or 3 inch lifts are available.
You can get extractors for them from Genie. they are wild cats. I just found out the other day that Rocky and Feroza wheels will fit. You can get manual hubs for them instead of the factory vacum ones. Mine havent failed yet but I do have a set of hubs at home ready to go.
I found another website from Greece that may also be able to supply air operated difflocks for them.
Keep us in the loop with your mods. Cheers, Chris

Ive seen that thing, I was driving back from Newy one day and this thing was a couple of cars ahead, going through Belmont. I tried to catch up but due to traffic being crap, I couldnt get close to check it out. But it sounds pretty mean, I was scratching my head at it for a while.OGJON wrote:hey Barnsey

Barnsey,
First you drove a GQ 2.8 and I also dove a GQ 2.8.
You then went and got a 105 series cruiser. I now have a 105 series cruiser.
Now you have gone and got a Kia........... just letting you know that i will me keeping the 105 and won't be getting a Kia.
Best of luck with the beast.
What's the donk in it?

Haven't driven it yet. I'm told the motors are ..........OK.
about 145hp out of the twin cam standard and they are supposed to be able to handle 400hp with standard internals and some people are supposedly making 750hp with them
not too bad from a little 2lt twin cam

Re: Barnseys $500 Dead Kia
Have you got it going yet?
Re: Barnseys $500 Dead Kia
So, what's the general consensus on Kia? I need a wagon and don't really want to be punting a GQ or similar sized beast through inner-city Melbourne traffic every day.
How "capable" are they with a bit of suspension and tyres? Any major issues to watch out for? What's a decent price and the best year model?

Aussie ones definitely are 4.778 (43:9) from the two diifs I've exploded.flyinwall wrote:and here i was thinking that they were all 4.778:1 ratio since that is all the info i could find about them on the net

NZ 4.625 is the only other ratio that is readly available
US spec (From Kia worksop manual) 4.778 like us. That's what has made SAS single diff swaps so difficult, no one else seems to have used 4.778 in the last 50 yrs of civilised motoring to match our rear.

Looks like a rebuild. My $500 dead Kia is turning into a $5000 Kia.
Oh well, it's still a cheap car for $5k. Seen them for sale up to $12k...........Should be fixed by the time I get back from work in mid Oct.
Did the ex know what "oil" or "water" is and where they should be put in an engine?

Re: Barnseys $500 Dead Kia
Bah - from what I've seen with these things snapping timing belts, they usually put valves through pistons anyway - so a bottom end rebuild isn't much more work...

Bit hard with a non-interference engine.....
SOHC of the same series engine (F, F2) yes they do put the valves through the pistons, but not the FE3N

Re: Barnseys $500 Dead Kia
Ahhh...I wonder if they started to design their engines as non interference when they realised that they snap timing belts more often than the oil filter should be replaced...?DAMKIA wrote:tehekho wrote:Bah - from what I've seen with these things snapping timing belts, they usually put valves through pistons anyway - so a bottom end rebuild isn't much more work...

Re: Barnseys $500 Dead Kia
It came with the change to DOHC, different pistons, different valve angles, etc.tehekho wrote:Ahhh...I wonder if they started to design their engines as non interference when they realised that they snap timing belts more often than the oil filter should be replaced...?DAMKIA wrote:tehekho wrote:Bah - from what I've seen with these things snapping timing belts, they usually put valves through pistons anyway - so a bottom end rebuild isn't much more work...

The engine as you are probably aware is a Mazda design, also used on the MX6 and Ford Probe in DOHC form.
A lot of the issues with DOHC Sportages chewing timing belts in the US was as a result of the SOHC engine being widely available in other Ford/Mazda models, and people using a SOHC belt and waterpump on the DOHC engine. The belts and waterpumps actually do fit, roughly, but they are different tooth profiles and consequently have a dramatically shorter life.

I farkin hate things that beep at you
Can be done. I removed the bell from my computer fully becausae of the stupid dinging. Other people use a bridging wire and switch as they would stil want to use the stupid thing.Don'tKnow why.
I used a soldering iron and melted the contacts to remove the dinger. It took a while and Iwas nervouse thinkinng the car wouldn't start afterwards.
There was a thread on this in 4x4 wire but it mightake a while to dig up.
Hope that helps Cheers, Chris
