ok as most on here probly know im in the process of putting GQ axles under my POS, 1 of the reasons behind this is coz im sick of busting ring and pinions.
now i have got ARB's and 4.88's 4 the GQ axles already, and wot i wanna know is wot is the best way 2 break these babies in so i dont have anymore trouble ???
drive round the tar in H4 ??
or do a few runs up the beach but dont flog it ??
or just put it 2gether and wheel its a$$ off ??
the only reason i ask is coz i dont really know and i wanna stop bustin gearsets...

the reason i ask is coz a mate of mine said that i can wack them in his truck 2 break them in so that wen i eventually get my chitter going again i can whack them straight back in there and go wheeling..
also do i need 2 run a special oil 2 break them in ??

exactly the same parts as you have.
yeah thanx 4 the replies guys, ill just wack em in my mates truck and do a few beach runs and his wife can drive it 2 and from work during thw week 4 a week or 2 and that will do, then b4 i put them in mine ill check the backlash and pinion preload
also will disconnecting the front shaft and driving round with the hubs locked b any good 4 the front ??

yeah almost the same here i fitted the new rear gears like a month b4 trials and drove it 3 or 4 times out on the local track flogging the pi$$ out of it and they only lasted like 4 more trips after the trials :(

I dont know if this will help u or not but I've spoken 2 a mechanic mate of mine about the gearbox in my feroza. He was telling me about problems he had with the transfer case in his troopy. Had 2 strip it down and rebuild it at 60 000km. Since then he has been running a heavier grade gear oil in his gearbox, transfer case and both diffs. It now has 280 000km and still like new.
I beleive the gear oil is a 90 grade
Another mate is now running the same grade oil in his cruiser because the bearings were getting noisey in the gearbox and now it's making little 2 no noise

All new ring & pinion sets require a brief break-in period in order to ensure long life and quiet operation. The following break-in procedure is recommended before applying a heavy load and/or constant usage.1. Insure that the axle has been filled to the correct level with
proper hypoid lubricant before driving the vehicle.
The oil rating must be GL5 or higher.
2. Bring the axle to normal operating temperature by driving the
vehicle (unloaded) for approximately 15 to 20 miles. Do not
run full throttle accelerations or create any shock loads.
3. Let the axle assembly cool completely.
4. For the next 200 miles of operation, drive gently, without any
heavy loads.
5. If trailer towing is intended, an additional cycle of 200 to 300
miles of break-in is required without the trailer. This is important!
To properly break-in a new gear set, a minimum of 500 miles of
driving is essential before towing.
