Re: best money saver
it is a heavy beast, but does he have a big right boot by any chance? with the gov rebate sometimes gas is a viable option.....sorry but my knowledge is limited as i drive a 4.2 diesel.
Re: best money saver
20l/100 sounds about right. Heavy vehicle and only a little engine. There's a few on here that have added gas and turbos - although that is mostly to the 4.2 petrol.
Don't know if your mate wants to spend money to cut down on running costs or not.
Hyclone ?

Re: best money saver
For a minor improvement in economy/power/torque, get an EFI RB30 out of a Commodore or Skyline. For a large improvement, put it on gas (LPG is half the price of petrol). For the best value, get EFI manifolds and run LPG, and then bolt a turbo onto it.
As said, its a "normal" car motor pushing around a 2.5T truck, so its never really going to be that efficient.

Re: best money saver 3lit Petrol GQ
i did the turbo gas thing and was getting 30l per 100km, i did the efi before that and that made the economy worse, but it made it a lot better offroad. if i had my time again i would have either left it stock and put up with the lack of power or what i ended up doing in the end rip it out and fit a ls1. from my experiance no matter how much money you throw at the rb30 the motor is still too small for a 3t truck.

Re: best money saver 3lit Petrol GQ
What's the rest of the vehicle spec? tyre size? driving style?
I run 31s on road, and my 2.4T carby RB30 gets 12.5-13L/100km on highway trips, approx 15-17 around town or towing on the highway.
Never measured with the simex on or offroad consumption but I'd imagine it's a fair bit higher.

Fit it up with Straight LPG use Impco 225 mixer with a b2 converter and 110L tank, use a r31skyline/vl commodore intake plenum with throttle body, plug up injector holes, source the hot-side from a vl turbo (turbo, turbo manifold and t3 turbo all bolts straight on, but engine mount bracket needs to be modified to clear intake side of the t3 turbo) get a 2 1/2 or 3 inch exhaust fitted preferably with mandrel bends.
Once doing this conversion you'll be getting alot better economy/torque and power, it can be easily done for $1500-$2000 maybe even less
This is the current setup im running on my Rb30 GQ Patrol and i haven't looked back since!

Re: best money saver 3lit Petrol GQ
i have a rb30 gq running 33 muds, 3 inch lift, arb bar, 100L gas tank, custom draws. i get 550km's combined driving on gas unloaded. my engine is stock except the gas setup (and i took out the heating element under the carby). towing my camper (550kg) i use pulp and get 375km's out of 65 litres.
Re: best money saver 3lit Petrol GQ
The LPG rebate is $1600 towards a conversion
Depending where the gas tank goes will depend on the final price
If the tank goes in the rear compartment (behind seats) thats the cheaper version
If it goes under the car, thats the dearer version
Your mate will be outta pocket well over $500 goin to LPG ,even for the cheap version
Whats the overall condition of the car ???
If its go alotta Ks and a bit on the ruff side, id just drive it to death
The 3l patrols arent worth alot
LPG uses more than petrol,(up to 30 %)its just cheaper at the pump

my GQ lwb has 4" lift, 33's, stock bottom end RB30 with vl injection, high mpunt T04 turbo @ 8psi, 270cc injectors and tune, 2.5" exaust mandrel bent.
and it does about 17l per 100km on the high way and about 20-21l aronud town. its now about 5 times more power then when it was carby, and it used about 36l per 100 on the hwy when it was stock.
go the turbo injection or turbo gas for sure, mine will lift the front wheel in 1st on a hard launch! it turns heads when you roar past little rice burners!!!

Re: best money saver 3lit Petrol GQ
i used to run 31's on my rb30 gq with a 2" lift and was getting around 400-450 from 65l petrol combined town/hway. now running 33" and still get somewhere around 350-400 depending how hard i push it, it is all about how you drive it, it will never be quick as a stock car so there is no point flogging it, this is what i have found anyway, personally i have had bad experiences with gas on a few cars so i just put up with it.
LWB GQ Patrol 3.0L, 33" Mudstar's, 2" Lift. For now!
