Post by Hammertime »

I have a 1992 ST 3.0 Wagon and the alternator has karked it. A Bosch RB30 (VL) has been suggested as a replacement. any advice out there?

i had the auto elec at work rebuild my alternator and delta wound it...it means that at idle revs i dont get full charge (i get just over 12v at idle, some cars wont even get that much) but as soon as i up the revs i go straight up to a fraction over 14v charging...and under load im puting out 96-97 amps...all on the factory alternator.
you can notice lights dim down a little bit at idle, but it's not an awful lot...and you don't need to worry about modifying anything to fit the alternator in.
last night i actually got the multi meter out too and checked the charge level making it to the battery...lights on, air con on to demist windscreen, and wipers on... 13.96v @ 1100rpm...car idles between 600-800rpm depending on its mood.
the alternator might actually be puting out a little more than that depending on any voltage drop...i just wanted to see how i was going at the battery is all.

i have an rb30 patrol, and am on my 2nd alt now, next time it goes im goin for a universal bosch 100-120amp alt, and just mod my mounts to suit, heaps of cars use these and are cheap and easy to get. i found the rb30/hitachi alt hard to get in good condition, and expensive for what they are.
