Suzuki ute rego
Suzuki ute rego
Hi all, have just bought my son his first car, a 1981 Seirra that needs a bit of work but he's only 13 so we have a couple of years to 'bond' over its repairs. My question is - it is registered as a 2 seater 'ute' so we were wondering if it is possible to cut the back off it and make it into a proper ute with tube tray etc, we are in NSW if that makes a difference. Any advice would be appreciated, ta Jafo74 + son

While I really dislike the look ... yes is it doable, there are several threads on here about others that have done this to varying degree's of success. I would be in contact with an engineer though .. I am afraid that " a bloke on the net told me it was OK officer" does not stack up all that well as a defence.
The search works quite well these days .. put in UTE CHOP .. will give you alot of info to get you started.

Is it a short or long wheelbase?JAFO74 wrote:Hi all, have just bought my son his first car, a 1981 Seirra that needs a bit of work but he's only 13 so we have a couple of years to 'bond' over its repairs. Its a short wheel base.
I dunno, this seems to work with my Mav having 6'lift running 35's and bar work all over on the road, you just have hope for that dumb blonde coppa...I am afraid that " a bloke on the net told me it was OK officer" does not stack up all that well as a defence.

Hi Jafo74 & Son
Doing this will require an engineers certificate. You are making structural alterations to the car.
Personally, I think it's a terrible idea, unless you are significantly stretching the wheelbase. The end result is a less practical (and amusingly, less capable - yes, really-) car after all the work. Some people think it looks good though. I'm not one of them, unless the wheelbase is significantly stretched. Even then the rear close out can look pretty awkward.
THIS is how to cut the tub off a SWB sierra and stretch it:

Thxs all, that's pretty much wot I had been thinking esp about it being ugly. The main reason for asking was to please the son, maybe when he buys the car he can start thinking about taking the grinder to it. Ta
Re: Suzuki ute rego
would definitely need to get it engineered. although in nsw it is registered as a "ute" by the rta...go figure.
awesome project for a 13 year old by the way! he must be real happy!
