Hi fellow 4wders
I have a few issues with my 1uz powered hilux. previously a 22r
when i purchased the truck the seller mentioned that a new fuel pump was needed as it was showing symptoms of fuel starvation when at 2/3 throttle. I was still able to drive the truck daily just without full throttle
I installed a bosch 044 pump yesterday and was able to get 4.5/6 throttle then the motor would cut out much like a rev limiter.
few questions....
Do i need a larger supply line?
Would a surge tank help?
Could it be coils, leads, or ECU?
How do i get faults codes from the diagnostic port?
Any advice info would be very handy
Regard Fabs

1uz hilux fuel issues??

Re: 1uz hilux fuel issues??
i am currently in the process of fitting a 1uz in my lux. scott at venom cobras at slacks creek, a guru of 1uz is using a lift pump to pump from the tank to a surge tank or swirl pot in the engine bay or atleast closer to the engine and then a pump to pump appropriate pressure from the swirl pot to the engine and he says he would not use any other setup. it works by the pump that pumps to the engine pumping more than the engine could ever use, and the left over cycles back into the swirl pot. the other pump pumps more than the pump to the engine can pump and fills the swirl pot and recycles back into the tank. this way if you get on an angle so the tank pickup cant get fuel you still have the swirl pot and then when it picks up again it fills the swirl pot again, so you never run out of fuel.
Your best bet would be to take it to someone who knows the engine or even a performance shop , as a performance shop will know straight away as they are cluey and can also put oxygen sensors on it etc

Re: 1uz hilux fuel issues??
to get the diagnostic codes you need to short out the Te1 and E1 terminal in the diagnostic port then turn your ignition to ON and count how many times the engine light flashes
if it ain't broke send it to me i'll fix it!
Re: 1uz hilux fuel issues??
Thanks fellas for your replies
I will look at getting a surge tank very soon.
Do you know what size fuel line would be sufficient. 3/8 ??
Thanks again Fabs

Re: 1uz hilux fuel issues??
I ran mine with the standard 3rz fuel pump and tank without issue, never starved of fuel on an incline and never suffered low fuel pressure either. While a swirl pot is one way to do it a 3rz tank and pump is probably cheaper and easier.

Re: 1uz hilux fuel issues??
we did a turbo conversion on a 3rz extra cab hilux, ran awsome on the dyno then driving round the street it would carry on like a pig on the throttle. installed a surge tank and ran like a dream ever since. good luck

Re: 1uz hilux fuel issues??
Sounds like a surge tank issue. Keep your other fuel pump and make it the lift pump to your surge tank, and you are laughing. Although, I should think you may have the fuel pump too far from the tank also, as that Bosch044 is massive overkill for a stock 1uz. So something else in fuel delivery is not quite right. I would suggest, maybe double check your regulator, that its still working properly and that it has the vacuum line hooked up? I would double check the feed line and make sure you dont starve that Bosch pump out, if it gets no fuel it will burn up and there goes $200.
I have a surge tank for sale, Aluminium, 2 Litre, with all brass barb fittings. Running in my 1UZ car right now.
Its similar to this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/1-25L-FUEL-SURGE ... 35aa4ae16b" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
$120 plus post (NEG) Its quite large, and suits 4x4, as its made upside down to all the car ones.
Be careful with which one you buy, most of them are made to sit upright in the boot of a race car. You want one that is upside down, so you can mount it under the car, and still feed the fuel pump off the bottom. (If you know what I am saying)

Re: 1uz hilux fuel issues??
Oh yeah, mine has a 1/2" main feed for the Bosch044, and the rest are all 3/8" barbs. I am changing it out as I want to run stainless fuel tank and surge tank. At the moment they are both Alloy, but making both out of Stainless.
