hilux vs navara

Post by Kata »

hi all,

not after a bashing seesion here but am in the market for a replacement 4x4 ute for camping and hunting, nothing way too hardcore

I am therefore looking for a 2005-2008 Hilux or a Navara 3.0ltr turbo diesel 2003-2007, not the 2.5ltr, Only turbo diesel 4x4 options

As base model hilus SR is more, way more expensive than the STR Navara

Thanks for the replies in advance

Go the hilux...theres a reason its more than a Navara and its not just because of the badge....hilux diesel has a flatter longer torque curve where the navaras is very peaky.....

Navaras blow smoke from the factory and hilux's dont

you pay extra for quality

After driving both and owning earlier versions id much rather my navara for on road performance over the lux.
it a comfier ride too.
although my navara is a single cab and the hilux is a duel cab.
The new hilux has coilovers not sure if the new navara has torsion bar or coilover but i prefer the navara.

only way for you to tell is to drive both and weigh up what you want it for

motor wise, the D4D hilux is common rail while the 3 litre navara is not, its the older axial rotary injection pump. the hilux is using later tech than the navara. the navara is the old "grenade" ZD30 but not as prone to failure, especially has your looking 2003 on.
there all have there common faults. one sort of good thing about the navara D22 is its hasn't changed a lot since the D21. some parts are still interchangeable.

I have a 2006 D22 and have clocked up over 170,000km's now and haven't really done much to it other then servicing.

As for old mates comment on Hilux's being better I am yet to see why they are better.

My Navara goes anywhere a Hilux can go with the same mods.

My opinion is somewhat second hand but a few mates have been looking in this area for awhile and one of them said that he felt that the Hilux was just trading on its name thesedays, and if you stand them side by side there wasnt too much that swayed them the way of the Hilux other than the history. This is coming from non-4wders, just general ute users.

I was in the same boat as you and went for the D22 because it was a cheaper option and now love it, great to drive onroad, goes ok on easy tracks & beach & the Economy is fantastic 10 ltrs per 100 round town & as low as 8.5 on H/way. My 2 cents worth Dooma.

Trading on the name. Lots of non-4wd people are still living with "unbreakable hilux" ringing in their ears, and they'll tell you quite confidently that the Hilux is the best 4wd ute on the market.

Drive it - if you like it, buy it.

Not that I'm at all biassed, but have you driven the Triton with the 3.2 DiD? If you're looking at dual cabs and putting mates into the rear seat, try sitting in the rear seat in anything you're planning to buy.

I have done the looking around for a ute aswell and i also think the hilux is a great ute but i belive it to be way over rated... I didnt mind the navara but would get the hilux over it but that is is due to the bad run nissan has had with it diesel engines (i know the navara doesnt have many problems compared to the patrol but i still dont trust it enough to hand my money over). I have been impressed with the triton and looking at getting one of them.

Mate just did this because of now having a child and wanted something that would be comfortable touring for the kid in the back when she gets out of a child seat.
I went with him and was amazed how uncomfortable everything is these days :bad-words:
They definately seem to be aiming all utes at tradeys with comfort up front for them and crap in the back because it doesn't get used except maybe to store the Hilti equipment.

He ended up with a Rodeo which in my highly Hilux biased opinion is actually pretty good. I like the Navara on price and the size tyres it comes with but don't like the finish of them or trust the motor. I do trust the Hilux motor and like the new shape (although many don't).
insert rant > I hate the TRD version as it becomes completely useless to tall to be a race car to stiff to be an off roader and to pretty to carry tools < end rant

The BT-50 and Ranger seem to get a decent wrap as non problematic vehicles too. Haven't had anything to do with them myself.
I know a few tradeys that swear by their new Tritons for fuel economy and power after they traded out of Hilux's but I really don't like the cab shape. Another that towes a 3t trailer daily got out of a Triton into a F250 or F350 (can't remember) and the fuel he is now saving is awesome.

Have you had a look at the Isuzu DMax :?:
Or if you want to save coin the Great Wall V240, with the money saved you could throw some Mog diffs under it, chip the motor, get a comp spec winch and enough lights to make any night become day
I haven't seen the V240 first hand and can't comment on it's quality.

Drive them all and choose what you like; with a snatch strap and mates or a winch and an unhappy wife/cable runner you can take any vehicle anywhere ;)
Kind Regards,
Brad

Anyone here sat in the back seat of the current shape Navara?

It has to be the smallest rear seat of any dual cab ute on the market at the moment...I was shocked at how small it is.

That being said, the drivers seat/position was the most comfortable out of all of them.

still wouldnt get a navara thou.....

We have some D22 Navara's here at work in a mine they hold up well compared to the tritons. The big problem is front suspension breakages and steering but this is in and extreeme environment, although they have steering problems with the take home only cars too..
I have a 2009 D4D hilux and evertime you get in it after driving the other cars here even the boss take home cars like pajero's navaras Glxr tritons and navaras the hilux feels much tighter handles better on and off the road and more comfortable.

If you want reliability the most reliable twin cab ute we have had is the old 3litre twin cab hilux if you work in a mine and know the reputation of sparky's wrecking utes this thing had 130 000km all ug with sparkies. It just got decommisioned as the rear doors wouldn't shut anymore due to the body flex from rust and the chassis was just about broken.

My wifes uncle has a D40 navara with all the fruit about 2 years old. We go 4wdriving with him a bit and after seeing and driving my hilux has one order.

In short I love my Hilux and think it is worth the extra money and Toyota's service and repair has been good so far.

LOL. I'm a sparky who works with my old man and our 2 work cars are new V6 Hilux's. All our work cars in the past have been Toyotas and have no intention of changing. We have had a very very good run with them and dont have to touch them apart from general maintenance.
When we were buying we first looked at cabin size and comfort, the hilux was way bigger inside than the D22 (since we are all over 6 foot), and more comfortable both in front and rear. One dual cab with canopy and one single cab with alloy tray and canopy have been fully loaded from day 1 and haul that weight day in day out no problem, and on average once a month one tows a caravan and one tows a boat around Vic for camping trips etc. Reliability is not an issue. We havent broken them yet and doesnt seem they will any time soon.
Now, i dont want to start anything. But ive noticed nearly all roadside workers and construction workers and the like, drive Toyota's wether they be Hilux's or Landcruisers.
I may be abit biased but I do believe Toyota still provides excellent value for money.

The current shape Navara the D40. I assure you it has more legroom in the back the the new Hilux.

The D22 back seat would be as bad as the old shape Hilux.

Why is it only the Toyota driver's feel the need to bad the piss out of everything else on the market ?

Is it to justify the extra money they spent for the "Unbreakable Hilux"

The Hilux has to be the most overated ute on the market.

My Navara has done 175,000km's and has only had general servicing and a transfer mount.

We have 5 or 6 STR's at work, they have anywhere from 70,000 to 200,000 on them with not one problem apart from driver error.

I recently bought a new colorado 3.0 td after driving all the twin cab utes available.
the reason I bought the colorado-
*the new hilux and d40 navara were the nicest CARS to drive.
*the d22 is by far the cheapest to buy new
*and the bt50 and ranger are good value for money with great torque all through the range
*my favourite to drive was the hilux but there is no way known that it is worth the extra nearly 10 grand more than the other options. The d 40 is too peaky with a much smaller torque spread and who in their right mind thinks that its a good idea to try and squeeze that much power and torque from a 2.5 litre? obviously no one but nissan.

I bought the Colorado as It has a great spread of power and touque from near nothing to about 3500 rpm, I have a mate thats a roof tiler who has the earier td rodeo (2006) that tows 2 tonnes of crap every day for work and has put 220000 kms on it and it still runs like a gem.
They use the same engine that izusu use in their light truck range , so I figure its not a highly stressed unit as its fitted with similar power and torque specs.
the vehicle I bought was an auto LTR with all the friut that an SR5 has but it was 9K less $ than the manual sr5
my only gripe with the colorado is that I feel they are a little dated looking inside compaired with the hilux or d40, but I bought it to work and tow and trust me its going to get a flogging so really who cares about the dash layout.

my tip look at the colorado's or bt50/ranger and keep the extra coin for mods or your mortgage, because the hilux maybe a bees dick better but not enough to warrant the cash (and yes I have owned several hiluxs over the years so I not lux bashing)
85 high roof 1.3, 6.5 tc, air lockers, ruf and 34 swampers. yep its an ugly pos.

I know 2 blokes who own Navara's, one d22 and one d40. The bloke with the d22 is a die hard nissan fan and you wont teach him any different, the navara has been sas'd, full barwork, fox shocks, turbo diesel on gas, etc etc... this thing cops the biggest thrashing offroad and he hasnt broken anything, all its done so far is an idler pulley and belts and its done just shy of 200k. Its a freak. I'm 6 foot 3 and i have no hope of sitting in the back, forget about it, the front isnt far better. Now the d40 is alot roomier inside but in my opinion still not as comfy as the hilux. The d40 done a fuel pump in the first 6 months and the bloke needed to fork out a $5k repair bill.
Im not hanging sh!t on nissans, hell they're probably made next door to each other. Im just using 2 utes as examples.
