New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
after recently ordering a set of 4.88's and solid pinion spacer, i have just start pulling the diff down and put the new and old pinions side by side.
The solid spacer seems to be a heap shorter then the original crush tube...
Does this look correct?

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
there should be shims with it to set the preload

i looks like it mif=ght be short but it has to be shimed up as pre mentioned. with mine they solid specers where way to long and had to be trimed up. it is possible they have sent the wrong one, but im sure a phone call to ask them should solve this problem. they are very helpful.

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
that pinion looks way too big for the car in the background.

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
Yes, i think i will have to ring and inquire.
the spacer came with a set of shims, but nowhere near enough to make it the same size as the crush tube...
ugh...

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
so i just double checked the difference between the two.
the crush sleeve is approx 60mm
the solid spacer isnt even 50mm including all the shims...
Any Help?

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
how much does the crush tube compress when your doing it up?Lowisuzu wrote:so i just double checked the difference between the two.

I wouldnt have thaught it would be 10mm, but perhaps it is?

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
well, the crush tube is the old one, so it is crushed... does the tube "un-crush" when pressure is removed from it???
Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
Nope the crush tube doe not uncrush what is you origional raito?i thought you could not fit 4.88 in a standard housing being that the crown wheel needs to move over further, correct me if i am wrong.
Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
Did you order off locktup? maybe give them a ring, they are very helpful and will know.
You can fit different ratios in the same housing, however i believe you cannot fit 4cyl gears into a V6 housing and vice versa.
I have just ordered the exact same thing from locktup, so let me know what you end up finding- they are very helpful.

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
i was under the impression there was only drama's fitting the gears in the older housings, which needed a different bearing installed.
i have Chris from locktup chasing this up for me at the moment.
Original ratio. not 100% sure, but when i jumped under the truck and spun the tailshaft, i got about 3.5 revolutions to 1 revolution of the wheel. so i dunno if its a 3.5:1 or something similar to that...

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
Hopefully get that pinion bearing off tomorrow and put it on the new pinion to mock it up and see if it all fits and if i can set the pre-load correctly.
would i be correct in saying that the pinion having 10 teeth and the crown having 43 makes it a 4.3:1 ratio diff?
took another couple pics.
Old pinion on the left
Housing - centred.
Housing looking straight through where the pinion sits.

What did chris say from locktup bout the spacer and gears?

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
We spoke for a while last night and came to the conclusion that we still dont know exactly whats going on.
I have the right spacer, the right gears, and what appears to be the right housing, but it just doesnt appear right.
i am going to mock it all up, see if i can set preload ok and that it all seems fine and get back to him after that.
i havnt been able to get the bearing puller i had hoped to originally to pull my pinion bearing off. i should be able to track one down. are there any backyard tricks to getting the bearing off without munching it?

Nah just the bearing splitter and a large 2 jaw puller and it should wind offLowisuzu wrote:We spoke for a while last night and came to the conclusion that we still dont know exactly whats going on.

Then heat the bearing up in the oven and just drop it on.

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
so got the pinion bearing off as i had to buy a new bearing splitter.
But for the life of me, i am unable to get the pinion seal out.
i have read on here AND in the Haynes manual that it is easy to pull out. but it is just jammed. Cant get it out.
Any help?

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
You can get a seal puller from ebay or any auto shop which makes it alot easier, or just be persistant with a flat screw driver and you will eventually pry it out. It get destroyed when it comes out and they are usually really tight..
Good luck

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
So finally got the pinion seal off. took a big F-Off screw driver and a pole to extend it to pry the sucker out. man it was stuck in there hard.
got the inner pinion bearing in the oven atm so i can put it on the new pinion.

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
man that seal must have been in there a while coz usually a big screwdriver and a good hit with ya hand usually sends them flying.

Re: New nitro diff gears and solid pinion spacer.
ok, so Chris and i may have sorted this problem out.
i have another set of spacers on the way, this time... the right ones. lol
hopefully these turn up tomorrow and i will be putting the diff back together over the weekend, so i will be able to confirm
exactly what the problem / solution is.
Cheers.
