Re: 4.4L how far can you take it
Mine is out to about 5L - although tired and needing rebuild now...
Landcruiser liners, Holden pistons, 3.5L heads and spacers, Crow high torque cam, Scorcher (Bosch) electronic ignition...
Ran the oil engine oil through a temperature based bipass so when the oil was up to temp it ran through a cooler. The unit was in a County and ran real well for a long time.... just plain worn out now... needs some love...
There is heaps you can do, but to be honest, a "not far from standard" 4.4 is a better option then all the money in doing the build to get something that another badge can offer in standard form... (and yes I am a rover purist but see the reality of things too...)
My 2c I spose

Re: 4.4L how far can you take it
Maybe cheap to swap but you will need a engineers cert and not really worth the effort i reckon.mick&shon wrote:i know its only a 4.2L but they werent a bad donk in there day
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

Re: 4.4L how far can you take it
Not a good way to see a rangie hope ya missus and any one else in the rangie are ok .
Id stick with doin up the 4.4 over using the 3.9 not saying the 3.9 is a bad thing its just the tourqe from the 4.4 with a good cam is lots better keep the layland heads on it too they have better ports and bigger valves than the rover heads .
As for the 253 thats a step backwards the 4.4 will deliver more power and tourqe if you are compairing standard trim motors and like loanrangie said will require eng cert

Re: 4.4L how far can you take it
the only good thing about a 253 is that you trip over them they are that common and cheap.. and you can cook them to get home if you dont have a tow home or spare radiator hoses..
there is no such thing as a stupid idea... just a person who owns a rover!!!
Re: 4.4L how far can you take it
thanks lokka ,yes the missus was very lucky, how much do you know about auto's in the early rangie (80mod) i picked up a 2 door the other day cheap with crook transfer i pulled the back of the transfer out last night to find the differential unit completely chewed up including the end of the rear out put shaft can you tell me who would have one 4sale.

Re: 4.4L how far can you take it
mine is auto does that make a difference to internals?

Re: 4.4L how far can you take it
depends what auto you have. if you have the conversion that is where the auto is hooked up to the 4spd rangie box via adaptor plate(they just take the 4spd transfercase gears) or where the auto gear box is in the 4spd casing or the zf auto.. i stand to be corrected

Re: 4.4L how far can you take it
well does this help......... in this gregory's workshop book the 4spd transfer looks the same as what i have, but ill grab a torch and go and have a look

Re: 4.4L how far can you take it
righto its has adpater and the bellhousing has "RITTER ADPATER" on it, the auto looks like a C4

Ritters mostly used C9's i believe but it may be a C4 - at least its not a BW35 that was commonly used.
