BW transfer rebuild cost?

BW transfer rebuild cost?
G'day folks,
I picked up a '93 Vogue the other day but the transfer is buggered...makes noise when hot and skips a bit round corners....luckily the rest of the car is in really good shape.
What's the going rate for a rebuild of one of these in Australia? I was quoted $850 the other day and they talked about bearings and small bits but nothing was said about the chain or anything else. What should be considered the minimum parts replacement on these?
As I've mentioned in my other posts I will fit a small block ford when I've accumulated the parts so, would it be wise to go straight to an LT230 swap?

Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
The bearings etc is the easy part, its the viscous centre that is the expensive part. Just replace with an LT230 and be done with it.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
Yeah ok. I got quoted $2500 for an LT230T complete conversion.
Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
Are they gold plating it ? you can pickup an LT230 for around $500 and then fit it yourself.FIXR7 wrote:Yeah ok. I got quoted $2500 for an LT230T complete conversion.

Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
That was a full rebuild but I don't think it was fitted. I know of a ZF and LT230 for $400 2nd hand...condition unknown at this point. What does a 230 cost to rebuild....ive already been stung with second hand shit remember. Who would you trust in Perth for this?

If you want to fix the BW then its probably best to buy either the bits or the whole recod case from Ashcroft UK. They certainly know their stuff and you could be pretty sure of a good outcome. Google Ashcroft for prices etc.

Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
Thanks Phil,
Yes that's looking like the best option at the mo. rovacraft want $1500 for a 2nd hand one!?! and $2100 for a rebuilt one and they can't tell me what the rebuild consists of!?!
Anyone used an Ashcroft rebuild on here?

Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
LT230's almost never fail at least i have never heard of a failure, one out of a D1/D2 with lowish k's would be ok without a rebuild. Dont know how strong the BW is but i wouldnt be running one behind a high torque/hp motor.

Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
Ok, I'm going to chuck a 2nd hand unit from Beechboro 4x4 in it and then accumulate bits for an LT230 conversion. I believe the later versions are the best?
Thanks everyone.
Thanks everyone.
Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
Hey lads,
Does the LT230T bolt straight onto the ZF trans in the '93 model without any changes?

Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
You'll need a front driveshaft as the BW one is a tad longer otherwise it should fit straight onto the back of the gearbox.. I also remeber that about 1995 onwards (if the donor LT230 is from a later Disco) the spline on the shaft is longer than the earlier ones. Autos are easy to replace as the shaft can be unbolted and a later type can be fitted (done this before).
Good luck with it.

Cheers Trav,
Ok the 230 is to come from a '98 Disco manual. Sorry, are you saying that the output shaft of the auto needs changing or the shaft to the front diff?

Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
Shaft on the back of the auto will need changing. I would sell you one cheap if it was the right unit but I don't have one. The wreckers would have a good one second hand or a new one is around $220 when I last needed one (was about 5 years ago though ).FIXR7 wrote:Cheers Trav,

Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
Ok that would mean a strip down of the auto trans to change it right?
Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
Nope, on the end of the output shaft on the auto gearbox they'res a bolt that holds the splined shaft onto it, remove the bolt and they're you go. Quite simple really.

Re: BW transfer rebuild cost?
Sorry, I thought you mean't the output shaft needed changing which, normally, would go right back inside the trans. Got any pics?
