bad fuel consumption on my 2.8 hilux
hey guys i moved back to newcastle from qld a couple of months ago and a day or 2 after moving down i found out my glow plugs were rooted, so i changed them over and it went back to starting normal again. after the first tank of fuel though i realised it was chewing fuel and hasnt got much better. before i did the plugs i was doin about 9.5 litres per 100 km's then after its doin about 12 per 100. has anyone had this problem before and if so whats the fix or does anyone know a good diesel mechenic i can talk to about it and get it fixed. thanks guys
Re: bad fuel consumption on my 2.8 hilux
Alot of varying things will effect fuel economy, including factors out of your hands.
Different fuel grade, different ambient temps compared to newcastle..
12.5 is still far from bad fuel economy, 3l/100 is no big deal, i would run another few tanks before thinking about wasting money at a mechanics.
My 3l gets about 10l/100 with 35s n 4.88 gears so somewhere in between.

Hey mate just out of curiousity what was your car doing when your glow plugs gave up?
Im wondering if its the reason why my car isnt starting.
Would your car still start but just take a alot longer or would it not start at all?
cheers, HTH

HTH,
Diesel engines are compression ignition so they should just about always start even if the glow plugs aren't working. The glow plugs just make it easier by preheating the air before the engine cranks over for the first time. My 2.8 had dud glow plugs when I got it but I didn't even really notice till I replaced them, having replaced them, even cold mornings she still starts almost instantly whereas before it would take a couple of revolutions. So basically I doubt glow plugs are the reason your car isn't starting. Hope that helps.
As for the glow plugs causing higher fuel consumption, I don't really see how they can as they are only in operation before the engine starts. Also having read a few threads on here about it I have just taken 12L/100Km as about standard on the 2.8's, its what I'm getting pretty much regardless of how I drive it, although there really is only one way, flat to the floor lol.

Re: bad fuel consumption on my 2.8 hilux
the problem my car had was that it wouldnt crank over, as soon as u put a jumper pack on it though it crank easy. so i spoke to a auto elecy after checking the battery which was a brand new high perfromance thing from century and he said glow plugs for sure so yeah i changed them and havent had a problem since. i jsut thought it was weird that as soon as i changed them my fuel economy went out the window although it was before i did my first tank of fuel down here and ever since its been crap. thanx for the ideas though
Re: bad fuel consumption on my 2.8 hilux
Are you using the same brand/type of diesel here as you were in QLD? Although I couldn't imagine it would make a 3l/100k difference on an engine like the 2.8.
Also is it possible you are driving faster here than you were in QLD, just keeping up with traffic or freeways, etc?

The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
Re: bad fuel consumption on my 2.8 hilux
i never really used the same fuel station in qld just whereever i was and im doin the same here but im driving a bit hillier drive then i was up there but i dont see how it could have made that much of a difference but maybe it could be. i havent done any highway or none start stop driving really since i got down here
Re: bad fuel consumption on my 2.8 hilux
Main causes of bad fuel consumption i come accross is lack of compression and lack of efficient fuel delivery, both of these may be in your hilux. i suggest that as it was shortly after they where fitted you check the glow plugs are tight and not leaking, an easy way to do this is to spray soapy water on them while the engine is running and see if there are any bubbles, or if it has been a while since a oil change it may need one of those. for the fuel delivery the most common problem is blocked fuel filter, change it.

i always move it to where i like it if i want power turn it up if i want it cheap to run turn it down.

Re: bad fuel consumption on my 2.8 hilux
glow plugs do affect your starting, and do work after your car is started, they only use power when you first start up but after that they are kept hot by the combustion of the engine firing. especially on an engine thats probably a bit long in the tooth and has lost some compression over the years.
four things a diesel needs to run is Diesel, Air, Compression and Heat
the last one being from the glow plugs
when glow plugs screw up they stop heating with just electricity but will still heat up while running and stay hot for a while. so if you have hard starting or it wont start at all and you have good compression, diesel delivery and obviously getting air, its most likely your glow plugs.
