I'm sure it's been asked a gazillion times before.
Can I use synthetic rope on my Warn 9000 pound low mount?? Are there any preferred brands of rope?
Dave.

Re: Synthetic rope on a low mount?
yep mate have plasma on mine. no idea of brand though sorry.
only the first roll hurts, then its a ride..
Re: Synthetic rope on a low mount?
Yep! Just make sure your drum is clean and free of burrs, and fit up a hawse fairlead for the new rope.
A lot of the newer winches these days come with rope, or a rope option (eg. Tigerz11).

Re: Synthetic rope on a low mount?
Just be careful if you do winch out under load the drum can heat up due to the brake-in-drum design of the warn winch. I've had synthetic rope on my warn low mount for years with no ill effects. I have never seen it personally in the flash but have heard some stories about synthetic rope melting when a long winch out under load is happening. I guess if you do need to do it, winch out in small hits with a break in between.

Re: Synthetic rope on a low mount?
I personally don't have plasma rope on my winch don't like the though of it being cut up easily but from what I have heard on a low mount you need a different rope I don't know the full details it either has a sleeve over the first section of the rope or a different compound to deal with the heat of the drum brake ( so the first wrap of rope on the drum insulates the rest of the rope ) hope it helps to get the answers your after
Re: Synthetic rope on a low mount?
I'm not sure about other brands, but of the couple of lengths i've bought from Tigerz11, the rope has had a sleeve on the drum end (for heat protection), and also a sleeve on the eye end (for abrasion protection). I am yet to see a plasma rope to snap from abrasion in person though (i'm sure someone has done it though). If you check your rope when you're washing it after a dirty weekend, as you should, then you'd see any frayed strands while doing so.metak wrote:I personally don't have plasma rope on my winch don't like the though of it being cut up easily but from what I have heard on a low mount you need a different rope I don't know the full details it either has a sleeve over the first section of the rope or a different compound to deal with the heat of the drum brake ( so the first wrap of rope on the drum insulates the rest of the rope ) hope it helps to get the answers your after
