Cost to rebuild my ZF auto

Post by GRIMACE »

Quoted $2550 lots of shit cloged up in filter and lots of metal shavings and shit in bottom of pan  Have to cut my exhaust aswell.
Price may be less for cash, they start today and I should have it back by wednesday
Its pretty bad and it was sliping all the time (i just never noticed  ) and thats why I always thought my RR was abit slower then expected and other RRs.

Yeah replacement xfer case is on my list but its after the wider stance solution and atleast a rear locker (maxidrive).

Toorak sound very popular will have to use them hopefully oneday.

I would fit a LT230 to your Rangie first.

I fitted my air locker when I still had my viscous coupling transfer and found that once the rear locker was enganged, it would push drive throuihg to the front, rederiong all that money and time useless.

Fit a LT230 first. You may not habe your rear locker, but you have even drive all-round off-road!!!

Just something to think about.

So you saying that the borgwarner viscous unit can transfer the drive 100% to the front wheels ? ? ?

I thought its maximum was 60% front or rear.............. If it transfer all the drive to the front then what the fark where they thinking when they designed it  they musta been smoking lotsa drugs :D

What I meant was that with open diffs front and rear, drive is more even distribted through the driveline, but when you thow in a locker, you them put more force on the rear, and the viscous for some unknown reason (which I found with mine) decides to feed more drive to the open end front, leaving the rear with less drive (it won't deliver 100% to the front, more 70-80%!!)

I have also seen Rangies with Borg Warner VC transfers with both front and rear maxi's fitted and the viscous 'swapping' more drive to one or the other. Once one end got more slip, it would rive the front or the rear end more, which put the Rangie to a big disadvantage.

As good as the VC is, when it comes to the crunch, it just doesn't make the grrade, end of story. That is why I suggested you fit a Lt230 before spending a fortune on maxi's and be dissapointed.

Good luck,

Yeah I have always been wanting to change the transfer but I will have to wait till I find a cheap unit as recoed ones are abit to much $$$$
But yeah I dont think i will get the maxis until I snap a ten spline axle so I guess the LT230 will be placed b4 the maxis (i think heheh)

Also I didnt pick up my POS today as the torqe convertor was sent to brissy and didnt arrive till late this arvo (it was real bad aswell aparently) so he reackon tomorrow mourning  BUT as i have alreayd said I cant pick it up till i get my next pay check as the price is not gonna be much lower than 2500 now as I have to pay for them to cut my exhaust and the welding of the four new flanges to bolt it back up again....
I am trying to scab up the cash left right and centre

Only some front radius arms and stock springs and shocks nuthing really usefull...................
Ow unless someone is interested in my current Borg Warner viscous transfer ? ? ?
And most of the bits and peices form the LRA 30% articulation kit. I have almost all of it taken out  the only two things i am keeping are the ball joint extension (might be changing soon) and the rear shock mount kickers (but they have already buckled & bent so they're coming out too & goin for a trip to the wheely bin).

So I dont really have anything I wanna sell................

ANYONE INTERESTED IN A SET OF LOGITECH Z-680 Full on THX computer speakers ? ? ? they are fully sick aiiiiit

Yep I agree with aquarangie. When he used to have the viscous unit, every time he tried to drive something difficult with the rear locker in, he would have a couple of failed attempts where just one front wheel would spin before the VC got hot enough to work properly, then he would drive up with 2 rear and one front spinning :D

Probably not very much and not many people - especially if it is in similar condition to your gearbox :D .

If you do decide to fit a Lt230, get all the bits or you will be chasing up components that should have been included!!

With the 10 splines, just drive a bit gentler and they wikll survive,. but they will break eventually as you know.

thanks guys,
Well if/when I do decide to change the VC xfer I will ask you people exactly what bits are needed so i dont miss out on any.

And Landy_Man after seeing some of the shit they took outta my box I dont even wanna guess what my VC xfers case looks like, I am pretty confident it cant be worse than my auto but still not interested in finding out any time to soon. :D
